I would argue there's a physiological benefit because it enables runners to lock on pace. It's no coincidence that all 3 WRs recently set were all run at a consistently even pace, almost as if they're running on a treadmill. So while it may not be as tangible as, say, track surfaces or shoes, it's still a huge physiological benefit.

100% agree. I said this previously, in both the 5 and 10 records, the evenness of his splits is ridiculous. He would be the first athlete in history to ever be able to reel off multiple (10+) laps within 0.5 of each other and this is HUGE when it comes to maximizing energy loss and efficiency. Go and look at the breakdown of the km stats between him and Bekele - do we really think Bekele was that bad at judging his pace compared to this guy? That is all wavelight.

As you can see, Cheptegei was dead on pace (2:37 per k )for 7-8k, while Bekele's WR splits somewhat fluctuated throughout the race.

The only split that seems odd is the 2:35 which is right after the pacer dropped off. Did he get a rush of energy after the pacer dropped out? Was Bekele pissed that the pacer died off the last 1k for a 2:39? Did the crowd amp him up for those laps? Did he think he could hammer home the last 5k? Whatever it was, it clearly hurt him as he ran 3 of his slowest Ks after that point.

Would he have run on the wave light if given the opportunity in that moment? Who knows.

Did the wave light give Cheptegei a ~6 second advantage? I don’t believe so.

Is the “about to be lapped” the “Bannister Rule”? Roger used an about to be lapped pacer to cover the third lap of one of his sub 4 attempts (I think it was the 3rd lap)

Let's do the math here then.

The average per km fluctuation from KB is nearly 3 seconds (2.9 second) and the key thing is that this isn't a steady reduction in pace it is +/- almost the entire way. For Cheptegei it is 0.8 seconds - otherwordly.

But both athletes have outlier final km's - Bekele runs 2.32 and JC 2.34 so lets just take those away for the sake of the following. This means a more accurate depiction of pace fluctuation has Bekele at 2.2 seconds and JC at 0.5 seconds - a differential of 1.7 seconds At around the pace these guys are running (6.3 meters per second) imagine watching this race. Cheptegei fluctuates around 3.2 meters back and forwards per km - Bekele 13.8 meters per km. If you watched that race live your first comment would be "what is Bekele doing he's wasting a ton of energy dropping forwards and backwards that way."

Is that a 6 second advantage? I would say considerably more. Wavelight is a huge help and just because it will forever be hard to quantify that other than indirectly (by saying that even pace is a huge help even though we can't put a numerical figure on that) - it doesn't mean we can't apply some common sense logic to it.
