It's a bit early for midterm talk, but we can already see the tea leaves before the cup is empty. Crime and the border will be Trump's strongest issues. Charlie Kirk's death will loom large. The current rage over free speech, which people on both sides already agree isn't about free speech, will almost certainly fade into the background.
Being anti-Trump as a democrat will not go away. When Jimmy Kimmel is done with his monologue tonight, we should expect zero jokes and a bingo card full of Trump digs. It doesn't appear to be a winning strategy, but it's like telling someone to stop breathing.
And then, there is this:
The Democratic Party has worse approval ratings than Trump. They specialize in own goals, by working hard to appear moderate without any actual compromise. The solution, according to this author, is to find a series of "Sista Souljah" moments, which refers to a speech given by Bill Clinton denouncing a female black rapper who made a glib, extremely offensive comment that offended everybody on the right and in the middle.
Here's the problem: they have a lot of catching up to do, as *everything* Trump says is a Sista Souljah moment squared. Our President just got done chewing out the UN, making extremely practical points like "Hey, if you're serious about defeating Russia, maybe don't oil from them!" and "Your populations are growing restless as your collective economies stall...they don't like their burgeoning immigrant populations, whether they are to blame or not, so maybe do something other than act in the spirit of 'No human is illegal!'"
To be fair, Trump is an elderly white guy, not an angry Swedish teenager, so no one should expect him to get a standing ovation. But if you can't parse his arguments, if you want to call him Orange Hitler and then call it a day, then the midterms, where he is going to lose seats and (hopefully) the House, might not be the bloodbath we need to restore balance to the Republic.
