I've been told that there's a lot of risk in going to trial for both sides because juries can be unpredictable, so cases will usually settle before that happens. Susman also apparently does fee contingencies, so depending on how that was set up, they might have made so much money on this.

A lot of unknows and risks at trial, which is one reason nearly all cases settle. Risk and unknowns for liability and damages. Dominion probably felt confident that they would win on liability -- given that they had Fox News' own internal fact-checking department saying "no evidence of widespread fraud" and claims that Trump's votes were deleted or switched were "mathematically impossible," yet they are still putting whackadoos like Pirro, Bartiromo, Kraken and Giuliani on saying the opposite -- but Dominion had much less confidence in how much damages the jury would award. Proving loss of company value as a result of slander and defamation is a fuzzy matter by its very nature.
