Received by official "you have not been selected by the search committee......" from the The Western Illinois University. Apparently they are making progress in their search.

Kent Pagel resigned last Fall.

Schools like Augie want guys with head coaching experience. Also, I think people would automatically assume that a throws coach would try to make it a throws program.

It's a division 3 program. You recruit the kids who want to go there, no matter the event. There is no benefit of making it a "throws" program, or "distance" program. Schools like Augie tend to be loyal, which could mean promote an alum who has been there since he graduated.

From Augustana College job announcement three weeks ago: "Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred. The qualified candidate should have a minimum of five years experience coaching competitive men’s cross country and track, preferably at the collegiate level. Previous head coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level is preferred."

I read that as they want someone with head coaching experience (i.e., maybe a middle aged coach with some conference championships and NCAA Division III national championship experience. Maybe a distance coach who has had success building well-rounded men's T&F programs. Someone with a master's degree is going to beat out someone with just a bachelor's degree for a D3 job with a teaching component). Whomever it is sure has big shoes to fill when replacing a HoF coach. Good luck!

I agree with you there. What I’m saying is its possible that people would believe a throws coach doesn’t know any other event and so all events other than the throws and some explosive event will suffer. There have been some very successful head coaches who came up as throws/field event coaches. It just means taking the time to get to know the candidates

Florida State University will announce their hire next week for the volunteer pole vault coaching position. Word on the street is that an FSU alum will step in and take the job.

by this logic distance coaches would be terrible coaches because all they know is distance....

I sincerely hope it was Kent's choice. He is an outstanding throws coach and I'm sure that also having Ramona around the program was an asset as well.

Of course a volunteer hire is considered a hire. And of course they should announce the hiring of any coach whether that coach gets paid or is a volunteer. What seems silly is that the standard for announcing a hire is dependent on whether the person hired is getting a pay check.

Outstanding throws coach & good person don't go hand in hand. Rumor says was terminated for misconduct. Definitely didn't resign last year. Saw him at Big West & NCAA West in May, 2017.

They don't go together because most people are a mixed bag of good and bad while others are scumbags. The number of quality "good person" coaches that I know correlates to the number of years that the coach stays at one institution.
