From the 1992 through 2014 there was a steady, significant downward trend in violent crime rates throughout the US
For five years (from 2015 through 2019) there were only minor fluctuations in violent crime rates which remained historically low.
During the first two years of the COVID pandemic (2020-2021) there was a sharp increase in homicides and gun violence.
From 2022 to today, violent crime rates have resumed falling again, in line with the long term trend (since 1992).
