Lagat trains moderately...never has had a serious injury.

In 2005, when Lagat first started running for the U.S., he probably was 20 seconds ahead of the second best U.S. 5000 runner. He never ran 12:45, but I think most people would say he was capable considering he ran 12:53 in 2011...there's no way he wasn't considerably faster in 2005.

Now, he can still win tactical races because he has one of the best kicks of all-time, but he is nowhere near 20 seconds faster than the next best runner. In an all-out time trial, he would not win. He would place maybe 5th.

He outkicked Hassan Mead, a 3:38 1500 runner, barely, and people are making it out to be like the greatest thing he's ever done.

5 years ago, he was nearly outkicking Mo Farah, a 3:28 1500 runner.

10 years ago, he was outkicking a prime Bekele, the world record holder.

He is obviously regressing. He's not doing anything any of the world's all-time greats couldn't have done if they were healthy and consistent all the way into their 40's. He's a genetic freak. People also need to think about how the whole race plays out to judge a kick, not just the final time. Kicking in 52.something in one 13:35 race may not be as impressive as kicking in 53 or 54 in another, depending on how fast the pace was in the immediate laps before the bell. Every race is different, regardless of the final time.

51.9 last lap, sub 13:00, eased off last 10 m.

Lagat's last lap was probably faster than 51.9. The 51.9 was leader to leader. Lagat was a bit behind...he may have run a 51 low.

He wasn't THAT far behind - a couple of tenths - but...

1) He was on the outside of lane 1/inside of lane two for BOTH curves

2) Bekele shoved him outside a bit in the last hundred

3) He eased up a little at the end

Surely the greatest talent of all time would have been obvious earlier in college and not after joining the pro-circuit ?

Also, are you saying he was under-trained at certain times on his career, how much faster could he have been at his peak?

In comparison to most, he is under-trained, yes. His volume is considerably lower than most elites (60 to 70 per week), takes one day off per week, takes a couple months off after the season.

His talent showed in college. People who have been saying the contrary are idiots. He won multiple NCAA titles, ran 3:34 while still a college students, 3:30 immediately following the conclusion of his senior track season. He fell in one NCAA 1500 final. He would have won that race if he hadn't fallen which would have added to his total.

A summary of my thoughts:

1. It's hard for me to trust the performances of anyone who ran 3:26 right behind El G, even though I do dislike performance-based doping allegations in general. Those 90s distance times are almost like the 80s women's records at this point... Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Lagat has been doping for a long time.

2. The 2003 test incident seems to have been handled too poorly to be of real use.

3. Lagat's performance at the trials was spectacular for a 41 year-old but it's pretty much what I would expect from Lagat because he has been one of the best runners in the world for like twenty years.

4. Lagat was an outstanding collegian.

5. Torrence is fair to be suspicious of Lagat but did not handle it well, especially given the whole Peru thing. Comes across as sour grapes, for sure.

Well, it's true that Lagat was caught, and it's also true that when he and his coach found that politics had gotten them off went and asked WADA and the IAAF to issue an apology, and the orgs told Lagat and crew to EFF OFF OR THEY WOULD MAKE THE DETAILS OF THE WHOLE ORDEAL PUBLIC. Even the biggest PC weenie on earth, GH at TAFNews admits this is all true. Lagat is a cheat, always has been. But he has certain things going for him that will allow him to be protected lol.

That said, the whiteboys ran like cowardly cuck millennials and deserved to be losers. They let the Africans set up a wall lol.
