I agree the race looked odd, but there's nothing particularly incriminating in the numbers here:

And for the African 800m champion to outkick a field of 1500m specialists in a race that was slow through the first 3 laps isn't all that outrageous. He may be a relative nobody to letsrun but he's got as much of an international CV as any of the #2-#5 in this race.

Maybe he's dirty, maybe everybody's dirty, but the accusations here are wildly out of proportion.

I feel like the biggest difference the last few championships for the USA has been a) learning how to make it through the rounds and b) simply making finals. As we have seen time and again anything can happen in a final. A lot of the African runners are better than us, but they need rabbited races and are time trial specialists. Our guys and ladies are learning how to run well in Championship style races, and it seems they are learning from each other. In the 90s and even through the Webb era it seemed like our runners would always bow out in the semis or run tactically poor races in semis/finals. Now we are making it to finals and consistently running well in them.

Henrik has the total package and he's never been afraid to go balls out...

Makhloufi didn't close in 49.x. Hand timed from video he was 52.77. Official time on the lap was 52.76, and Makhloufi was just off the leader, by maybe .05. Manzano was also hand timed in 52.79, but he was slightly off screen, so could be 52.8-52.9.

The thing that is just wrong with Makhloufi is he did a 25.1 for the middle 200 of the last lap, and eased up at the end. No visible stress at all. Not breathing hard, not laying down, nothing. Sketchy.

What happened to Willis? Seems like the race set up for him...surprised he was a well-beaten 9th place 2+ seconds out of the medals.

If you watch the youtube video of the 2011 London (Emsley Carr) Mile, you will see that Leo Manzano was also able to make up a 5 - 10m deficit to Bernard Lagat on the last lap. Leo has one of the best 300m finishes in the world. It comes from many years of doing explosive drills and bounding exercises as well as having one of the highest VO2 max. tested. To be the best, you must be willing to do every exercise to compete at the highest level. That's what separates the greatest runners from the talented runners.

I didn't time the last 400m, but think Leo ran between 52.5 - 53s for the last lap. I just didn't think the Algerian runner would be that much faster. Again, great race by everyone. Just hold your negative thoughts on this evening's outcome and continue support the U.S. runners (Leo and Matt). They did a fantastic job this evening and need everyone's support, particularly ALL the U.S. runners community (sprinters, middle distance, long distance, etc.).............

What crap on LR's forum? Yes there is a racist (or two, whom Brojo's should work harder at banning, for sure, but they may be using randomized IP's).

Other than that all I can remember being said about Leo is that he is inconsistent -- which he has been.
