Lots of movement this week in the girls' rankings.
Top 2 aren't going anywhere until NXN, but the rankings below those 2 teams is worthy of lots of debate...
Bethlehem being in that #3 spot is just a complete error. They don't have a single runner under 18. They should be ranked closer to 30th than 3rd. Lone Peak is also way overrated based on their times so far.
JSerra's great performance at Clovis gives them a deserved, but likely a temporary bump. How good would they have been with Summer Wilson still there? Possibly #2 in the country?
Santiago falls from #5 to #7 but their speed ratings and team times tell me that they're still better than JSerra thanks to their outstanding top 2, and what would appear to be a couple girls off to slower starts than expected.
Buchanan jumps to #4 after their youngsters carried them on their home course. We see Buchanan Freshmen come in and kill it immediately, every year, followed by regression or limited improvement in high school. Will these girls end that trend? They're very good, regardless.
Ventura falls to #15 because they raced without their #2, but everyone in CA knows that they're top 5 with Melanie True running.
Niwot and Air Academy are both better than Romeo, Lone Peak, and Bethlehem.
Trabuco is wayyyyy better than 19th... but why do they keep hiding from the top competition in Southern California? They're trying way too hard to fly under the radar, but everyone knows they're a threat to win CIF-SS and State.

If you’re not from the Northeast, don’t comment on Bethlehem. That was an incredible performance on a historic course. They are podium contenders, absolutely no question. The California girls will, like usual, crumble under the pressure, mud, hills, and wet grass at NXN.

i agree that they are very good and can place very highly on a good day, but they are also super vulnerable. They dont appear to have a 6th capable of covering for one of their top 5 having an off day.

Spot on about bethlehem. It is as if they are treated like they are saratoga! No one other than FM trains in a way necessary to podium at NXN. I would be shocked to see a podium finish for bethlehem. Sure, nice compression, but lots of top runners (true front runners) need to blow up (or get hurt) for bethlehem to be a factor for podium in that race. Now, if the original team only format, then absolutely bethlehem is a factor. The issue is too many individuals without a team make the race too hot. Only true front runners on a team can handle it to get a nice low stick.

Manhattan xc 2024 course was ideal weather, little to no wind, and hard - very hard packed trails. Now, sure, no historic times this year. But, the race was on a Sunday that is unusual. Plus, did you watch the girls eastern states start? Now, if saratoga 2023 was in that race, they would have had a 75 meter lead on the entire field at the entry point to the woods. The race was a perfect setup for good quality Manhattan times for girls that is around 15 flat. The power of having teammates right there is 100 percent special. There is no better feeling than when your teammates actually train during the summer and then run selflessly together with minimal "outkick" my teammates selfish behavior that can poison top teammates. It is truly great to see bethlehem pack running. That is how xc should be run. I also agree that California runners are regularly in trouble at nxn. They don't seem to be able to handle the rhythm running in slop that is so common in Oregon come December.

The individuals don't count in team scoring, so they don't matter.
If you don’t think they’re a podium team that’s fine but don’t come on here and say they’re closer to 30th. They finished 11th at NXN last year, only lost 1 senior from their top 7, and every indication based on their times this year is that they’re a better team than last year. Maybe they won’t be on the podium, but saying they’re closer to 30th is just ridiculous. Saying you think they’re top 10 but not top 3 would have people take you a lot more seriously than just throwing random nonsense out there.
Also some food for thought for all the NY/speed rating haters, Meylan’s predictions had Bethlehem finishing 18th last year and they finished 7 places higher. So maybe everyone should tone down this talk about how Bethlehem isn’t built to contend in an NXN style race since they already proved last year that they were actually more well equipped to handle NXN than a bunch of other teams that came into the race expected to beat them.

Watch the 2022 nxn girls race. Look at the race video around 1 mile and later at 4k. It is nuts! It was a giant see of individual runners. It is so hard to know where you stand as a team in this format with so many quality individuals. This is only reason I believe bethlehem has a shot to do well if they pack run. But, they need to perfectly thread the needle AND need spotters all over the course to encourage them to keep passing girls around them who will most likely be team runners. Nxn changes jersey colors each year. They need to have completely obvious jersey for individuals such as a stripe pattern. Different colors are fine but stripes to make it easier to distinguish who is an individual vs. Team. All team runners should be a solid color.

It does take 5 to score, and having 5 is good enough to be an elite team, but it’s also nerve-racking. On a 5-deep team, if one of their top 5 isn’t running or not at her best, then it hurts the whole team score. That’s why it helps to have a solid 6th/7th runner as a back-up in case something happens to one of their top 5.

I agree that Bethlehem is not on the same level as the teams below them in those rankings. Way too much weight given for a race they won without much competition. They may end up being pretty good, but no way they deserve that #3 ranking.
Leachman was leading most of the Region 4 meet but didn't finish. She wasn't leading by as much as she usually does and her 17:20 from district isn't really on par with what we normally see from her. Her team qualified for state so she may still get another opportunity.

Lily Beshears has turned into a monster this year. was always pretty good but she has truly leveled up this year. curious how far she can get into the post season.
