He lied about the incident. He should have been truthful and said he was young and made a mistake. Several mistakes actually: attempted rape and underage drunkenness. Instead he chose to lie that it ever happened—lied about just last week. Based in lying about it makes him unqualified for a SCOTUS seat. There are other SCOTUS candidates who not have a need to lie about such a situation because they have never put themselves into such a situation.

Well, we should at least know the truth about something like that. It needs to at a minimum be part of the decision making. We don't just give blanket do-overs what someone did in high school. A sexual assault on a high school girl even though he was in high school at the time is a big deal. We should not accept that kind of thing.

Or he needs to accept his error and provide an acceptable explanation--why he did it (drunk?) and why he chose not to tell the truth about it just last week (?--I don't see a way out for him on admitting he lied).
