Here is what Woodward actually said to about Hewitt's [a diehard Trumper]:

And since Trump is forever linked with Hillary based on that 2016 race, when future centuries are laughing at Donald Trump and all the conservatives who backed him in this era, Hillary's astute remarkable words and themes likewise will occupy those books, studies, and whatever type of media is prevalent at the time. One will be a former president and the other not, but there is no question which one will hold greater respect as the history of the nation further unfolds.

Hillary is the favorite Democratic nominee of my lifetime. The tragic error was made by Democratic primary voters in 2008 by elevating Obama above Hillary. You had to run Hillary first, in the more favorable situational terrain, and then hold Obama for the much more difficult task in 2016, after two straight terms from your party.

That is not backfitting rationalization. I was emphasizing it on several progressive sites at the time. Any Democrat would have cruised in 2008, with Bush stuck at low approval rating for 3+ years since Katrina. The more charismatic candidate in Obama projected well 8 years later.

The bench was already so weak it looked obvious those two would run back to back, in either order.
