Ahem, no. ... You are the one who decide helium would be used. As an FYI: balloons float when just filled with air.

But such an effort using this method would obviously disqualify the effort by the Guinness World Record folks after they found out about it, no? Thus, team members would have to keep it hidden (a conspiracy).

I think it goes without saying that a hot a balloon would be against the technological innovation rule if you power it with an external energy source. If the runner heats up the the hot air balloon with his/her own body heat, then it could be accepted if they remained on the ground. Of course, I think you will easily find that the thermodynamics equations would be detrimental to the run if you have to power the heat requirements with just the human body.

But Marcus Muller's effort was in the 2011 LA-NY Footrace 2011, yes? That footrace probably had a different set of rules than the Guinness World Record rules, no?

It's not against any Guinness rules I can see and the runner would still be running under his/her own power, so no need to keep secret. It is legal as far as I'm concerned.

But unless you are on the GWR review panel, your views on what and what not are acceptable don't matter.

Guiness doesn't have full control over transcon records. No body is obligated to satisfy Guiness.

Someone should try a real cross-USA run, going corner to corner. There are two corner to corners. One from at from the US/MX border at the Pacific Ocean to the eastern end of Maine at the Canadian border. The other from the far northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula, WA to Key Largo, FL. It seems either run would be a first.

One fascinating question is how, through the long monotonous hours, she 'keeps her mind in the game', or conversely, allows her mind to roam, while maintain awareness of danger when jogging along the shoulder of a busy highway.

You can also listen to audiobooks, actually any audio content you can put on a smartphone. Tolstoy's War and Peace clocks in at over 60 hours; about 4-1/2 days based running she is doing.
