I believe it's just because they don't know English well. In the Moscow broadcast in my country they used an interpreter for the Kenyan athletes. They were very talkative then.
I guess that is possible but it surprises me a bit. The Kenyans I knew spoke very good English (sometimes with a think accent, but proper grammar). As far as I understood, they learn it in school there. Kenya was once a British colony, and I believe English speaking is widespread. Perhaps I am mistaken though...

I agree with you, I could have worded that better. I think he ran a good race even if he fell off the pacing a bit at the end, and yeah, I'd take 5th any day.
Has someone looked at the incentives? Ritz is 5th because the Kenyans just rip it and blow up. How big is say an appearance fee for Tsagaye?
I mean 5th place only pays $10,000.

notice one of the pacers #47 shadrack kosgei was in 5th place on pace for 2:05.41 at 40k, then i dont see him in the top 30 finish results, does chicago not let pacers finish?
it would have been a great personal best for him as his best marathon is 2:19

You're comments are meaningless when you don't look at the big picture. Look at the list of entrants, would you have predicted Ritz to beat top 5? He earned good money today, a good day's work overall. Cramps killed him, but he still wouldn't have finished much higher. Look at Moses Mosop talking 61 half, what was his second half split? What about Tadesse, how much money did he earn?

Does everyone get the time bonus, or is it only the winner who gets a time bonus as an incentive to make it fast? I'd always thought the winner was the only one who could get the time bonus.

They just interviewed Ritz; he said his hamstring started cramping around 20 miles. Still beat Moses Mosop, though.
