The following article was posted 3 hours ago on the Norwegian news site www.tv2.no “Never felt better.” The words belong to Jakob Asserson Ingebrigtsen on his own Instagram. This weekend, the star took two out of two possible gold medals in the 1500 and 3000 meters at the indoor European Championships in Apeldoorn. Ingebrigtsen was, as expected, dominant in both finals. “Very good,” says Ingebrigtsen to TV 2 about the championship. “Check YouTube!” Early in the championship, the 24-year-old was asked how good his form was. He smiled before responding confidently and succinctly: “Check YouTube, and search for Liévin!” In February, Ingebrigtsen set two world records at a meet in the northern French town. Now, one final indoor championship awaits, the World Championships in Nanjing, China, before the outdoor season begins. Plane tickets to China are booked, and the plan is to compete, even though he must be back in Sandnes as the aggrieved party in the trial against his father and former coach, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, just two days after the 1500-meter final takes place in the Middle Kingdom. As part of the team around Jakob, Filip Ingebrigtsen has naturally been closely involved in his younger brother’s preparations. He also competed at the European Championships in the Netherlands but was eliminated from his heat by the narrowest possible margin. If he feels this good now, I’m dreading what he’ll come up with this summer.” The World Championships in Tokyo in September are the big goal of the season. I'm not Cheptegei's biggest fan. I simply recognise he is still vastly faster than Ingebrigtsen over the 5k - and the 10k.

If you want to raise the subject of doping I wouldn't give a bar for either of them being clean.

You really are quite unequipped to understand anything anyone else says. Farah's championship achievements far outstrip Ingebrigtsen's. They put him ahead of the Norwegian. It doesn't necessarily make Farah the greatest but he's certainly amongst them. Only his lack of records counts against him. Ingebrigtsen doesn't have championship achievements over the 5k that yet match the best - so he falls short by those standards - but neither does he have the 5k (or 10k) times that would put him amongst the very best. Far from it. So by both criteria - championship victories and records - he has some way to go to being amongst the greatest distance runners.

How is it in pages of these threads you haven't yet understood what I was saying, that the criteria for assessing greatness in one event isnt necessarily the same as another? But whatever the criteria used, Ingebrigtsen doesn't meet "greatness" in either the 1500 or the 5k.

I haven't said Cheptegei is an all-time great, but that his records are so far out of Ingebrigtsen's reach that, by the criterion of time alone, that militates against the claim the Norwegian is an all-time great.

Farah is a measure of championship performances and in that regard Ingebrigtsen isn't in the same ball-park.

But if we are looking at the 1500/mile there's a bunch of guys ahead of him there, too, because they had a better championship record, they had the records and they dominated their peers. He loses to the "next guy" - whoever that is.

I haven't been defending Cheptegei. I confined my discussion to their respective achievements. (But nor am I saying Cheptegei is one the greats, he is simply faster than Ingebrigtsen so far). But if you want to introduce the subject of doping I trust neither of them.

The only valid comparison between El G and Ingebrigtsen is what they have each achieved. In that El G still far outstrips Ingebrigtsen in the 1500/mile. The Norwegian has a lot of work to do. He won't catch up when it comes to WC titles. Too late.

We've been trying to ask you why your criteria is different for different events, and which runners meets your criteria, and you refuse to answer because you can't actually explain it without contradicting yourself.

Which are the all time great runners you're referring to, who had the WRs as well as a consistent record of victories in the biggest championships? Note that you yourself is saying "as well as", not or.

Why would Cheptegeis WR be out of reach for Jakob if Cheptegei himself had a PB of 12:57 before he ran 12:35?

And this is why your criteria is worthless, when you're saying that 3 global gold medals, 3 European championships gold medals and 20th fastest man of all time doesn't meet the criteria for greatness in the 5000m.

There's only a single man in the history of the sport who has won the 1500m Olympic gold more than once, does that mean there's only one person qualifying as the all time great?
