Frankly, if I were her friends or family, I'd have someone delete the negative comments for her. Maybe volunteer Spencer for that job. There is no good to come out of reading those comments (or this thread). And yeah, a handful of people are going to bring that up everytime she races or is mentioned here for the rest of her life. People suck.

Never heard of spiranalolone? What's that a masking agent? It's not like EPO or testosterone. Guess it was really a minor mistake but an offence is an offence I guess.

This thread makes you understand how the madness of Salem, Mass and Nazi Germany happened.

She agreed to a 4-month ban. She didn't dispute it. She is someone very big on social media but it took her 4 months to come out and discuss her ban? Why did she not, on the day of her accepting the ban, make a video of why she was banned and how she is accepting it, and not wait 4 months to kind of dispute the ban? And, no, she doesn't need Spencer to go through the negative comments and delete them. If she didn't do the reported crime, why does it matter what people are saying? She knows if she was clean or dirty.

I wrote on a previous post that I am inclined to believe that Allie tested positive from her acne medication and that she's a doper.

Allie at the very least was extremely careless, and paid the price. The sport is so doped up, corrupt and fake--and she knows it. It's frustrating that athletes can't do some simple things, like google a prescription to make sure it isn't banned. I understand wanting to protect herself from anonymous negativity, but carelessness that results in a ban shouldn't engender too much sympathy. It's not on the fans, the reporters or the "people" to protect her from her own actions.

The same people who are frustrated that she is serving a ban for a masking agent, probably said "rules are rules!" when Sha'Carri got banned from the Olympics for weed.

And people who express contempt for this don't suck. This could have easily been avoided. Now she's opened herself up to suspicion, and that's squarely on her.

IMO, it's unfortunate that the OP failed to use Allie's whole name ( Allie Ostrander )in the topic line.

I don't understand how anyone can conclude that she isn't a doper. She literally failed the doping test and did not contest it. If I steal my neighbor's TV (caught by their ring camera and everything) I may not be Bernie Madoff, but I am clearly a thief.

Is it the biggest crime in the world? Of course not. May she continue to enjoy running like the rest of us. But, at minimum, she absolutely should fade away from being widely visible in the sport.

I agree. Neither Allie nor Spencer will ever amount to anything. They hit their peaks (which weren't that high to begin with) years ago, and are thinking they can overcome Father Time.

Here are the facts. AllieO took a medication that requires a Therapeutic Use Exemption. While not performance enhancing, the acne medication could be used as a masking agent. There is no evidence that Allie took any performance enhancing drugs.

She did not apply for a TUE because she says she believed that it was not on the list. Apparently she did not look very closely, because it does show up.

In March she tested positive for the acne medication and after a month she agreed to a 4 month suspension.

USADA announced the positive test and suspension last week and Allie responded a few days later with a short Youtube clip explaining her side. She admited that she was wrong to assume that the medication was on the list that would require a TUE, and she accepted the terms of the suspension.

There are no rules that require an athlete to immediately publically disclose their suspension.

There are probably legal protocol within USADA that take some time before the can issue a press release. It is within the athlete's rights to withhold revealing information while these processes occur.

Now some opinion.

She did her time and she admitted to the violation. USADA followed due process, and both sides agreed to the consequences. We'll never know for sure if she was simply negligent or trying to hide something. Her performance level last winter/spring certainly did not indicate any boost from performance enhancing drugs.

At this point it's basically case closed, well-known letsrun trolls be damned. In other words, it's over you fools! Sure you can block her from your social media and not follow her, and as long as you are not libeling or slandering her or any of her associates you are free to express your opinions. However, she is allowed to continue to compete and earn prizes and awards, according to the rules and regulations of the sport.

The problem is everyone knows athletes can use PEDs and not get caught. We know that people can be tested, not show a positive result, but this does not mean that they are clean (see Lance Armstrong).

It seems very important for certain people here keep to call what she tested positive for as an "acne medication" instead of saying she tested positive for a substance which has been prohibited because it is a masking agent. Spironolactone wasn't prohibited because it's an acne medication. Spironolactone was discovered/created, and it's primary use remains, as a potent antimineralocorticoid, an aldosterone antagonist i.e., it is a potent diuretic which is what makes it a masking agent. You will also see people here saying it is a mild diuretic, and that is blatantly false. It also has antiandrogen actions, and that is where it comes in and has secondarily been used to treat women for excessive hair or acne.

In a world where we simply don't know who is clean, despite that they do not test positive for any PEDs, it is very troubling when someone tests positive for a masking agent. It is more troubling when they provide a poor excuse for why they were taking that masking agent without a TUE. When we just do not have confidence in which athletes are truly clean, what makes no sense is that people are in anyway surprised that testing positive for a masking agent, with a back story that is weak, is problematic for a lot of people. It should cause everyone some concern.

If you want clean sports, the odd thing would be to dismiss this positive test rather than to question it. You can choose to believe that Allie O is clean, but to attack people who aren't convinced is wrong? Objectively, there is nothing wrong with people having doubts. And primarily there is only one person to blame for giving people excellent reasons to hold those legitimate doubts.

If you don't want to see negative comments, then you should probably stop publicly sharing your personal struggles on social media. Most of the "negative" comments on this thread have simply been critical of her extreme carelessness in not taking a few seconds out of her day to look up whether a prescription medication was on the banned list. A professional runner who is regularly subjected to out of competition testing should know better. As others have said, we have zero evidence that she used spironolactone to mask another drug, but we don't know for sure because spironolactone is a masking agent.

In regards to people who are dumbfounded that this thread is 19 pages long, when a professional distance runner with a large social media presence receives a 4 month ban, this is going to generate a discussion, especially from users of a message board forum that is primarily focused on long distance running.

If she says she's been tested multiple times in the last years, then she knows very well how the system works. Which means that having to check any medications she takes is part of her life as an athlete that gets tested often.

Things like "not a PED", "looked it up but didn't see it was banned" and "online pharmacy" are all pretty big red flags to me. This is not how clean athletes behave. Clean athletes check very carefully every medication they take.

Being devils advocate here: spironolactone is the perfect diuretic to use if you're doping because if you get caught, you can say you had a prescription and get off easy (like Allie did). It's not as effective as furosemide for example, but if you're caught with furosemide guaranteed you're getting at least 2 years. With spironolactone you're guaranteed to get the benefit of the doubt from most people, which is exactly what's happening here.

My verdict: doper.

What are you talking about? Shelby got banned through 2 olympics, as she should have! Her story was not probable.

This is the standard ban for these lower level masking agents with legitimate medical purposes. It's the same thing as Shicari Richardson's weed ban. Both Shacari and Allie immediately admitted to the indescrestion and served there time.

She should make all SM private for friends only. That is how all my SM is and I don't have to worry about rude comments.

But "let's not do this"? Let's assume this was an innocent but dumb mistake, as the overwhelming majority think based on upvote/downvote ratios in this thread. You are seriously suggesting she should continue force herself to read negative comments about this, where there's nothing left for her to do (acknowledged, penalty paid), the rest of her life? You are clueless about mental health. That's a recipe for PTSD. Read about what happens to people who are bombarded like that. My advice is practical and realistic. And no, she shouldn't quit YouTube, that's what's she has made 50% of her job.
