I've probably visited the Letsrun site at least once a day on average for 15 years+. I read the first page of this thread and have no idea who any of the people are or what any of you are talking about.
N I C H E post
Well running is a N I C H E sport you hall of fame dillhole
where athletic excellence meets media expertise? who exactly is providing this media expertise?
the photo shoot itself wasn’t a great idea but it’s not the end of the world either. the response to the criticism of it however is an A grade lesson in how not to handle media/publicity.
I’ve looked on the new gen website… and unless I missed it, there is very very little description of what this so called camp entails- what will the kids learn? Do? Supervision? Etc? Was this a running camp to learning running skills? Tactics? Is is a photography camp?
if the parents of these Hs kids really let them attend a camp like that ran by someone with such little credibility, then some blame needs to be placed on these parents too… it’s time to stand up and parent your kids and not let them go stay somewhere for a week without knowing the entire details.

I would imagine the kids who applied to go got more information than a random guy on the internet could find the week after it happened.
No one knows what happened at camp. No one knows who the kids actually are. Only we do. If you want to poorly on it then go ahead but everyone involved at New Gen are genuinely amazing and talented people. Trust me when I tell you I’d be the first to crap on anyone if they royally messed up.
I bet hard money that none of you have had a genuine conversation with any of us and therefore don’t actually know what you’re talking about especially when it comes to New Gen itself. To us you all just sound poorly misinformed and looking for a fight with some teenagers.
I think this is the biggest problem I have with this camp. It's an exclusive camp, mostly made up of the biggest HS running talents in the US, for the purpose of...running? wait, no, media creation?
A post of NGTF's insta describes the camp "where athletic excellence meets media expertise". So you're telling me basically all of the HS runners who were "household names" this year (simeon burnbaum, aaron sahlman, connor burns, etc.) are talented runners and have a deep passion for media creation? What a crazy coincidence!
More likely it seems like NGTF just invites the popular names to the camp to give it clout, then adds a few extra people who actually do media things to give it some sense of "media expertise" legitimacy. So what is the camp actually for? Running, or media content? The sad part is the camp feels less like it was created with the intention of supporting campers as it is a way to use HSers talents to promote NGTF.
Returning to the quoted post. If NGTF is posting about this camp all over the internet, yet you are saying we "have no idea what happened at camp", doesn't that seem a little concerning? Most running camps post things so parents actually do know what happens at camp, so they're not sending their kids to someplace dangerous.
The fact that everyone involved with running this camp was appears to be self-appointed by already being involved with NGTF is concerning to me. Just because you have clout in the running world does not qualify you to have authority status over 17/18/19 yo's in a camp setting.
I knew a person who really wanted to go to this camp last year. She was not a super talented runner, but she was a huge fan of NGTF and people like Ben Crawford/ reed brown etc. were celebrities to her. The fact that she wanted to go to this camp so bad, not knowing anyone and trusting that the people she sees on YouTube are actually who they are in real life concerned me a little bit. But, alas, they only accept people with clout so they did not go. I guess it turned out to be good thing this camp is just a popularity contest.
I find it bizarre that Emma Gee tried to get herself involved in creating a bunch of drama and then being the victim. The teens who did the photoshoot obviously see it differently than her, so maybe she should mind her own business and focus on her career.
That being said, the comments sent by the unknown anonymous instagram account were disgusting and she did not deserve that garbage to be said to her.
Also bizarre - the cancel culture keyboard warriors trying to harass the photographer and tag a bunch of brands. What are you people doing ? Close the apps and go outside and train.
Getting a healthy dose of criticism doesn’t mean you’re getting “canceled.” When you do things (especially stupid things) you’re opening yourself up for criticism. No one is preventing anybody from posting anything or doing anything for that matter.
Big problem for many people a day—they can’t discern criticism from cancellation
only seen one person in this thread mention it, but for some extra context Emma posted on her IG story a screenshot of her DM's to Matt W when the photoshoot was originally posted (ironic as the camper earlier in this thread asked why she didn't just do that instead).
Emma: umm does that photographer ryder hate women because why the girls recreating hazing sh*t in his photos Emma: like its super not cool and not creative Matt: not with you on this one girl Emma: ya we are done here. homophobic comments & bullying are not okay. nice culture y'all have created Matt: homophonic? Matt: typo sorry Matt: emma i dont even fully know what you're talking about & also am not responsible for what other people post on the internet
Such a huge cop-out by Wisner who's more willing to apologise for a typo then he is for orchestrating this mess of a photoshoot/publication
To add to this, Krissy Gear commented that “apology was coming soon” on Emma’s insta post and then after it was posted said “whoops sorry I didn’t know it was going to double down, explain the photos and not apologize” and now those comments are deleted as well.
This is so messy and literally could’ve ended with New Gen saying we should have been more critical and aware of the subject of the photos and what was being portrayed, we do not condone the homophobic comments and we hope to improve/learn ourselves /teach the kids from this situation
I just don't understand the rationale. They have no adult in the room when creating this "art."
Y2K style bullying? Imagine if they wanted to do a "1830s style slavery" throwback. Wouldn't that be awesome? There's some people who have real trauma from being bullied like those pictures suggest and it's just overall a bad look.
Nobody was doing the toilet stuff by the time Mean Girls came out. Most kids under 25 don't even know what a swirly is. Now, you have thousands of impressionable teenagers who just learned a new way to treat someone.
I wonder if Matthew wisner, Benjamin Crawford, Krissy gears dismissive attitudes change if Emma Gee creates an online petition of new gen via on running, hoka, under armour until she feels the appropriate apologies are made including her subsequent treatment in the comments?
I am going to give my money/support to new balance moving forward

The kicker for me was them passing the buck: “it wasn’t us…it was the 17 year old Asian American photographer that did it…and the campers loved the idea!”

how many brain cells does that take?
Right. To call yourself "New Generation" then do throw back bullying trauma photos is not very "New Gen." In fact, they seem to be hung up on "Old Gen."
