Yes, Black Lives Matter! Blacks are only 12% of the population but make up 40% of abortions. Save the black babies!!! Don’t let the Democrats kill anymore black babies! The democrats have been the party of racism for nearly 200 years. Their goal has always been to enslave and population control black people. They’re pure evil party!
Forced pregnancy... The US continues its desxent away from the first world.
Why not introduce legislation that criminalise men leaving their children and paying no child support to balance this out? Its all about a small group controlling women.
Mendoo go to jail for non support of their offspring.
In some states they are even held accountable for child support when their names are on the Birth Certificate, even when the DNA points elsewhere.
Couldn't get past the first page but public opinion is ~70/30 to uphold Roe. It makes no sense for 9 people to go against that. & it makes no sense for a Democratic majority to not preserve it now.
No matter where you fall, it doesn't make any sense to go against the majority on an issue like this.
It does make sense to the extent that the 9 SCOTUS judges are rendering a legal opinion, as opposed to a political or social one. Some judges do cross that line at times ("activist judges," with Alito certainly being one of them), but most don't. Roe v. Wade was always a very weak and legally flawed opinion. They only thing keeping it alive was stare decisis, which can only go so far.
I'd bet 90% of that 70/30 public opinion you refer to are people who have never read Roe, never read this "draft" that got leaked, and don't even know what language in the Constitution is being analyzed or even what the issue is. They probably don't even know the function of the SCOTUS in our system of government, which is how things like "It makes no sense for 9 people to go against that" even get said.
The irony is that not only will this opinion not render abortions illegal, we may even see an uptick in the procedure due to draconian anti-choice laws in red states. But don’t let the religious right hear this. The legitimacy of the Court is done. It was fun while it lasted
Changing the law doesn't change hearts and minds - the 20% of women who choose an abortion once they find out they are pregnant, will not suddenly want to be pregnant - they'll just continue to notwant to be pregnant but have to continue with it anyway.
There are many ways to avoid being pregnant without ending a life. Not having sex, vasectomies and hysterectomies are almost foolproof ways to not get pregnant.
But these are all things you do before you are pregnant. What if you actually are pregnant and don't want to be?
You should always control what happens in the space inside your body. There really is no such thing as privacy if the government can legislate for what happens there.
It's not official, but certainly looks like it soon will be.
The fact that Supreme Court Justices are political appointees and have lifetime posts shows how fractured American lawmaking is.
This is the fruits of decades of Republican skullduggery, not the new will of the people, or enlightened re-interpretation of women's rights. But appeasement to Bible Belters and last-century Conservative mores.
This is going to damage Republican chances at re-election. They will lose Republican voters and galvanize Democratic opposition. I would have though the Dems were Done, but I'm posting new odds... Harris in 2024 is now looking more possible than ever.
Nobody is forcing you to have an abortion. If you don't want an abortion, then don't have one. If you want one, you have the option to have one within 20 weeks. Unless you are pregnant...you need to STFU.
Anyone who supports a total ban on abortions is stupid. (Texas and Oklahoma rural white republicans)
Abortion is optional.
Forced birth* is mandatory.
*this is a term someone used on this thread that reflects what Rs are really doing. After birth they could care less what happens to a child. Forcing women to birth children is the only part they care about.
"Women shouldn't be able to make their own choices"
"Women shouldn't be held accountable for their own choices."
I think it’s telling how often the rhetoric shifts to punishing women rather than saving lives. A major part of why the radicals religious right wants to ban abortion is because they think sex outside of marriage is some sort of degenerate immoral behavior.

Good post. This is the perfect enemy for the Dems to run against.

These are the people who will literally argue "she should have done more to avoid rape" rather than admit that sometimes an abortion might be justified under their broken moral framework.

In ever case, religious and republican men are working to control women. How about Rs passing laws requiring men to be castrated if they impregnate a women without her written permission given beforehand? That would stop a lot of unwanted pregnancies.

Fundamentalist Christians are often worried about how SCOTUS decisions will affect societal behavior. When Lawrence v. Texas (2003) invalidated Texas' ban on same sex consensual sex, Fundamentalists predicted that many Christians would abandon their marriages and turn gay. It turns out they were correct, as around 10% of Christian men (17% in the South) went gay in the months after the Lawrence case was decided. So these cases have real life impact and consequences, especially for Christians.
