Pretty much every good Kenyan distance runner that came up in the Japanese system has said they have a better running culture than Kenya does when they've been asked about it. They're just better at it.
In these perilous times we inhabit it is sometimes appropriate to lighten the mood of appropriate and inappropriate humor in order to bring out the humanity of living in difficult times. That’s fair, but the US “running culture” ,as far as there is one, is based around sprints.
The WMM is somewhat a good comparison, but to be fair three of them are in the US and US pros are almost always completely focused on those. NY and Boston are slower and better suited to have slower Americans placing.
