The transition from horses to automobiles took about 10 years. These things happen fast.
It is expected that very soon the bottom will drop out of the used car market for ICE vehicles. They are just too expensive to own, so millions of well-functioning ICE cars are going to end up in the junk yard.
The same thing happened to horses. They were expensive to own but no longer useful. As I understand it, horse meat became a popular ingredient of dog food around that time. Economics is a powerful force.
