I'm going to go out on a limb and say his bonus structure rivals a lot of D1 schools.
Jerry would leave for director of Michigan or notre dame. That’s it’s. MSU is a big downgrade.
I agree that his bonus structure is probably similar to a D1 structure. MSU would be stupid to not go after him and try to up whatever he makes at GVSU. But what about that facility he has at GV. Nothing like that at MSU.
I think the appeal would be to compete at a higher level... Division 1 athletics is significantly more difficult than Division 2. So any accomplishment at D1 will carry more weight..... not that D2 athletes are not talented, but the depth at D1 is much greater, and to accomplish something at the Big 10 level would be far more recognizable than anything he does at the D2 level.
Accomplishing more at the DI level better than DII? Not so sure about that. It depends on what each coach wants. He leaves GVSU where is paid very well, has done an amazing job at building the best DII distance program in the country year in and year out, great facilities, etc. To go over to MSU and have worse facilities and maybe not the same support. I'd stay at GVSU and continue to be a national power!!! It's not all about DI and money for everyone!

I've found that when a large state P5 school wants someone specific...there is always money to be found if they actually want it. The going rate for a prized director these days is $250k with a bonus structure that will easily net them $300k in the first year. So either MSU is fine with the way things are (nothing wrong with that) & don't mind saving a little money, they go with Lisa. If they want Jerry & it takes a little more to make him budge, they double his salary without too much trouble. If they want to go shopping? Well, the money is there somewhere...
I heard through the grapevine that Baltes gets pretty big bonuses for winning nationals each year. Like around 25-30k.
That’s around total bonus for all metrics made.

The public salary database says that the total listed may include bonuses, etc. Not sure if it does for any of the three, but the $100k may be his total including all bonuses for that year. That is likely since the site is really just listing what the state actually paid the employee.
Why would Baltes leave? He knows how good he has it at GVSU, and he knows that he wouldn't ever be able to be as successful at Michigan State as he is at GVSU. He knows that GVSU is a better set up. It would be a downgrade.
