It's now May 13 on the west coast, the 30th anniversary of Henry's 8:05.4 WR in the steeplechase, which I was privileged to see.
The meet was the Northwest Relays at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium in Seattle, a 440y "Chevron 440" synthetic track at the time, with interior water jump. It was listed as Event No. 12 on the schedule, at 1:50 p.m. It was 55 degrees and a little blustery when the steeple began.
There were about 200 fans in the stands, and there had been hail and rain earlier in the meet; the PV was moved indoors.
2nd place was former Husky and reigning UW record holder Jim Johnson in 8:36.1. Johnson said "You know, if he had any hurdling technique, he'd have broken eight minutes today. I was close enough to watch him for the first two laps, and his hurdling form looked ragged to me. If he had the technique of the top steeplechasers--I don't include myself in that category--he would have been under eight minutes easily." T&FN wrote that he virtually dropped into the deep end of the water jump each time and then waded out.
It was said to have been only the second WR set in the state, and it was Henry's 2nd WR en route to his 4 WRs in 81 days. Many of the press accounts made much of coach John Chaplin having slowed Henry down at the Oregon dual meet on April 15, saying that Eugene was not deserving of a WR by a WSU runner--they only got to see a 8:14.8 CR.
Henry, what do you remember of your steeple WR?
