2017 College Track & Field Open Coaching Positions Discussion

The day, week or weekend you take your certification is worth the time investment even if it just confirms what you already know. You have like 40+ weeks each year to "gain experience" at the track with your athletes.

AND, it is during these certification courses that you make the "connections and friendships" that lead to both future jobs, and future collaboration. It is in these certification courses that you find like-minded passionate people in the sport to whom you can develop lifelong friendships, mentorships etc.

There is no NEGATIVE to seeking certification from people passionate to teach and share about track and field.

Certifications are good if you don't already know what you're doing. I would only go to make connections with the people there. The USATF content is pretty simple, and Level 1 is filled with mostly high school coaches and personal trainers.

USTFCCCA academy has been extremely beneficial to a lot of coaches. In fact, I think some career coaches should stop pretending they know everything, ditch their "old school" BS and go take some of those courses.

Are we talking about the same Maric that is lucky to have a job after the suspension during his ban from the sport? The coach who has only been coaching a few years, much less than the other 3 assistant coaches? Yes, he has had success. Yes, they have given him some scholarship money and he has made well on it with some international big hitters. But let's see what he does long term before thinking he should be given a bigger piece of the pie. But for now, I think he is grateful that UVA stashed him away for a year or so while the heat of his suspension blew over. They could have easily cast him away because they took a lot of crap for keeping him around. Just saying...

OSU fills out staff with a washout Pete Harber. Know the sky is the limit when the press release includes this quote from him. "Making sure that the student-athletes leave here having found their limitations while having a great experience is a top priority."

Saw on a throws message board that they could look at one of the other Maryland public University coaches. But message boards are never right, except when they are.

1. Emphasize your experience and pleasure in coaching any/all the events of track and field. If you don't *have* that experience and/or pleasure, get some ASAP.

2. Talk about how much you enjoyed the recruiting process when you were considering colleges, and how much you learned from it--and/or talk about how successful a recruiter you've already been, and how you really enjoy the travel and the whole process of getting to know HS coaches, the prospective students, their families, etc.--and/or talk about your experience in sales, and how much you enjoy it.

3. If you're asked about hobbies, indicate that your hobby is developing winning t&f athletes and teams. Your only other hobby is sleep, which you're willing to skip if it gets in the way of your first hobby.

4. Show that you are computer savvy and have a complete command of all social media. If you weren't a computer major/minor in undergrad, get some kind of computer certification and highlight it on your resume and cover letter (and in your interviews).
