2023 College Track & Field Open Coaching Positions Discussion

I think everyone would like to see candidates hired based on merit, but we are far from fair hiring practices as a whole. I am very appreciative for the men who have vouched for my coaching abilities. I plan on becoming a head coach in the next year or so at the right University.

My question is how do you advocate against not hiring someone “only” because of their gender or race?

is there a sense of “by any means necessary” due to old hiring practices?

How do we hire based on merit if like you said more men are pushed to be in leadership roles early on? I believe the key is like you said push women to be leaders earlier. I think this is more important than race/ethnicity hiring. I feel at this point I see more minorities in T&F coaching than non-minorities but that just may be my area.

I will never hire someone because they are a certain gender or race. I vowed to get to an administrative position so that I have the autonomy to hire based on merit so it feels good to have worked to be able to make it a reality.

It's hard because on the flip side of things, many won't hire you because of your race/gender. It's a very complex issue that all of society is dealing with. I noticed that very few women got opportunities to lead when they combined men and women track and field programs.

You're being non-sensical and contradicting yourself.

Firstly, why aren't we able to admit that there is an inherent gender disparity between career interests? More men are inherantly drawn to coach, so generally speaking more men will be capable coaches than ladies. Yes, we get it, bravo to you and your friend. You're drawing upon anecdotes. It's like saying women are super awesome drivers generally speaking because.....Danica Patrick....or something.

Secondly, I see this quip often, even from seemingly "educated" folk - Diversity is good because diversity is good?

What in the hell? That is a circular argument. Convince reasonable minded, average to above average IQ functioning members of society who have no interest in dabbling in discrimination as a means to an end that we should submit to this fundamentalist adoration of a subjectively defined and applied "diversity".

2) If it's a matter of skin colour and predominately skin colour - then why is one's melanin count more worthy than let's say....your passport, hairstyle or political ideology? Seems MIGHTY convenient ;) ....and obviously so. Reproductive organs another importance, really

3) The amount of folks who exist that are disgruntled or actually sexist and racist when merited jobs are attained are literally 0.0001 percent of society. If you're legit? Ye shall be known by the fruits of thy labour! Am I taking ya'll language now?
People know optics, they also know accolades. Winning matters. Actual winning. Titles. Titles. Titles. This is an industry of "falling forward".

4) Why is it only instances like these where the nebulous, ill defined concept of "DiVeRsItY" is applied? Why not in a 100m final? Top 10 Boston Marathon Finishers?

5) At the end of the day, if we're harping on gender, women aren't dumb. They're highly aware and although won't admit it - they know when something is an aspect of tokenism and when actual discrimination was leveraged so they could "get an opportunity". For the most part, they feel highly uncomfortable, slighted and at the end of the day not benefitting from being thrust into a role they're not prepared or merited for.

Not sure but looking at their roster Track doesn't seem to be a priority. Only a few athletes per event who aren't distance runners and some events don't even have an athlete representing. Schools that don't have a track on campus or full access usually lean towards distance since it doesn't really use equipment and they can run pretty much anywhere.

You know that an abundance of men have benefited from their friends being in positions of power. It definitely wasn't the fruits of their labor. In the coaching industry more men are in charge of hiring than women. People tend to hire who look, think, and believe like them. I will give the SEC credit for hiring a multitude of black males and black females. Some would say it's the best league in all of college sports. There hasn't been a drop off in coaching in the SEC. Diversity is a recruiting tool for both staff members and student athletes. Some joke and call it the BCAA vs NCAA. The reality is that the talent has spoken and athletic directors are listening.

What is diversity? Varied educations? Varied IQs? Varied heights? Varied coaching experience? Most job postings limit diversity. Employers want more education, more experience, better communication skills, better leadership skills, and higher IQs.

Yes diversity is everything you just mentioned.

Been a Head Track/Cross Country coach for a few months. Always been an assistant before. D3, $80,000 salary.

I mean I guess that technically counts as a track. 3 lanes and wonky looking dimensions. Also looks like no place for any field events to practice.

Damn. The most money I ever made as a Head/Director for Track and Cross was 58k when I was at a D3 and I was the second highest paid coach in the conference.

Funny…the assistant coach salary at SUNY/Oneonta was $42,000 in Spring 2000…only has gone up $2K in 24 years…see a problem?

In 2013 the Oneonta AD and I were able to split a vacant full-time head coaching position into two assistant coach jobs that were initially paid $25k with benefits. I took over all head coaching duties. This was partially selfish (I gained a title promotion) but was part of my long-term goal of getting to three full-time coaches with benefits on staff. Prior to this, Oneonta had two full-time head coaches and a $6000 assistant coach salary pool. Ten years later this is a nice step forward for Oneonta. I believe these assistant coaches still have an opportunity to supplement their income by teaching in the PE department, unlike many places that mandate it as a secondary duty. So, while we can debate if 42k base is a strong salary or not, it is not fair to say that Oneonta has not made any progress in two decades. -Angelo

Most women try out coaching for a few years and find that they want to start a family and leave the profession. Not all - But majority. This is fact.
