In my opinion, there are 2 key things Democrats still haven't learned.
1. People hate being talked down to. Democrats saying "the economy is great" is one - basically, they're saying "don't believe your eyes". The US economy was and is doing better than other developed countries. That being said, it wasn't "great" at all, and seeing higher prices week in / week out gets tiring (as an example, my Chipotle order went up seemingly almost 50% under Biden). People also don't like rampant political correctness / woke language ("unhoused", "justice-involved", "undocumented", etc) and think Democrats have gone off the deep end socially (trans issues - e.g. men in women's sports, pregnant men; not prosecuting crime, etc).
2. There's a belief - I hesitate to call it just a perception because there's an element of truth to it - that Democrats only care about about 6% of the population (black women). What did Biden promise? To nominate a black woman as his VP and to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court. It works to shore up support very well for that group, but it puts off (in varying levels) 94% of the population while doing so. And what else do Democrats talk about? supporting Ukraine and illegals. Again, a turn-off
