He/she does make a good point. Hasn’t developed any athletes. I don’t understand why that isn’t valued on this site and this thread. I think that is the most impressive tangible of a great coach, bedsides just making the kids happy for title 9. Kids are happy when they’re running faster. Has she done this. Show me some 2-3 minute 5k improvements from her efforts…
If you’re focused on development as a college coach, you’re not going to last long in this profession. That’s in the job description somewhere around “certifications.” Oh. And Travis Floeck to Washington State.
Listen, you don’t have to focus on it to do it. If you have a sound training philosophy and you’re a good decision maker and don’t hurt your athletes with emotional narcissistic behavior they will develop. You either can do it or not. There is no in-between!
The “focus” is mainly recruiting and the better athletes you recruit the more you get out of your coaching philosophy. If I can take a 5:20 girl to 4:50 I can surely take a 4:55 girl to 4:35 and so forth. The people that say you won’t last long are the ones that are jealous they can’t figure out how to get the same results out of the athletes they coach.
And for those who can't develop a cold, just recruit from the transfer portal, give established kids who were developed by someone else money and stay out of their way and let them do what they did to get where they are.

Why so salty; the transfer portal has created free agency for athletes, accept it. You need to give athletes scholarships to keep them. When you develop a 15:50 into a 14:00 kid after three years that is great! But the days where that athlete is content on a 20% scholarship until they graduate are over. You have to up their money or someone else will.

It's probably rarely about the scholarship for athletes who have improved dramatically. They see the prestige of a "bigger" school and can't resist the opportunity to try it on a higher level. If you are a star on almost a full ride at a below-mid-major in D1, you aren't going to get that kind of money at a P5 school. But you WILL get more "stuff" and chances at more prestigious meets, along with (most likely) better facilities and support.

Sorry to appear so Salty, just a response to the previous poster regarding developing recruited talent. There are those who don't even bother because they are either too lazy or just can't develop their athletes. The transfer portal serves a purpose and is great for the athletes, just kinda sad to see some coaches rely so heavily on that instead of actually coaching.
What's the deal with UNC distance.? Are they replacing Nadel or just giving both to Sorensen?

Please don't take advice from people who only give you two options. There is plenty of nuance here he is broadly glossing over.

Most of the time those kids are actually damaged goods there is almost always another story to why they’re transferring. If you feel you can correct the issues they’ve had at the previous school you can give it a go I just think it’s better to get a HS kid and develop them the right way, but like you said some coaches are lazy or like I said before they just don’t know how. I’ve been lucky enough to have some very successful coaches as mentors and that helped set me up to develop my own way to get the job done. We all make mistakes and don’t get it right every time but you learn from it and get better at it.

I heard it was for $30k.
Doesn’t matter the salary, this is a job for insurance/benefits
Could've stayed in college for that though
Lot more than 30k. It is a very wealthy private school and love hiring big names. They had Marc Brunel as their football coach. Salary is competitive but I heard that he is getting a free pass on all facilities to continue coaching his pro group and coach football strength etc.
