We merged two Mary Cain threads into 1. The 2nd one was entitled, "Update: Mary Cain makes another sexual allegation - Alberto Salazar looked at her exposed breasts while she was sleeping"
Why would I have empathy for a dysfunctional situation like that? Normal people feel disgust not empathy for the Nike cult. They leave it behind and don't look back. She didn't.
I was part of Nike's original cult way back in 1977. I saw Nike for what they were in less than two months, and fired them in less than a year. That's what Cain should have done.
You should have empathy because this is the story of a young and hugely inexperienced girl who is going through this for the first time in what is, for her, a very high stakes situation. Yes, she could have left. There are many things she could have, should have, done differently. But being in an abusive power dynamic is no small thing, and so yes - a little empathy would go a long way.
Yes - how old was she when all of this happened? She was in high school? We forget how young that is. She wasn't even 18? How old was she - 16, 17? Teenagers aren't adults. We forget just how young they are. They need guidance not judgement.
I’m curious how many people here have bought her book. 18 pages seems like a lot of interest, just like a book writer would want. Upvote if you bought.
Young girl recounts traumatic experience, brings attention to systematic issues in the pro running world, and your take is that she needs to "overcome her victimhood"? Considering she's at Stanford medical school, seems to me she's doing just fine. Do better.
"Do better" is such an obnoxious thing to say to someone.
Mary should move on precisely because she's at Stanford medical school and has a real opportunity there. Being stuck in the past will only drag her down.
As she said herself, while her classmates are starting Step and preparing for clerkships, she is out doing school-girl themed photoshoots with spikes around her neck at the age of 29, in order to promote a book where she disses almost everyone who crossed her path during the time where she was making at least 6 figures being a pro athlete.
Truth! How many opportunities does one get in a lifetime? Seems Miss Mary can’t see all that she’s been given.
I’m about 30 pages into it. Having been an elementary and middle school gifted ed teacher for 35 yrs., I’m somewhat familiar w/ kids’ competing egos and personas - and although far from an expert, I can def attest to the deleterious effect of being labelled an “outcast” kid at that age, especially when body and mind are still morphing. No doubt, the resentment is def there, I’m not going to call it an all-out diatribe yet, but even at this early point in the book it wouldn’t be unwarranted; aside from her parents, the boys’ team and their coach, she dealt w/ daily hostilities. Whether it’s all a legit recount or not, who knows? It would be interesting to get some Bronxville feedback at some point.
Every team has an athlete like her. They aren't always the best, but they cause the most drama. They think they're better than everyone and they demand more attention than anyone. They destroy teams.
i can appreciate what happened to mary, but this chick needs to move on with her life. we have.
This is her moved on life. She is getting a medicine degree and milking her experience to write a trashy tell-all book. Smart money move for a runner for whom running couldn’t make money.

First of all, I've never been interested in Mary Cains career. Even more so since she insists on pushing her personal drama on the public. She's just not an interesting person. Like the beer commercial, she's the least interesting person in the world. However, when this thread dies down I will attempt to read it from front to back, just to sort through the fuss. Thanks to wejo for combining the two threads into one. Heck, I'm still not even sure which girl Alberto was molesting. The fact that he's banned for it is all I need to know.
Secondly, empathy and sympathy are not synonyms. I can be sympathetic for her without having the least bit of empathy.
Merriam-Webster Empathy vs Sympathy Sympathy is a feeling of sincere concern for someone who is experiencing something difficult or painful. Empathy involves actively sharing in the person's emotional experience.

She already came from $ and will be a successful doctor. Born on 3rd base. Book might be successful but if it isn't she will still be rich.
That said, I don't envy her after what Al Sal put her through.

She also alleged that Kara Goucher's college coach had made unwanted sexual advances toward her, Kara totally said that this is false and her college coach was nothing but professional and still remain friends to this day.

She didn't allege that. She says she was told that by Salazar. Comments like this are stupid and purposefully out of context.

Again....what was she doing there in the first place?
I know Holocaust survivors, and I mean this literally not as hyperbole, who have talked about their experience in a death camp less often than Mary Cain talks about having a bad time being paid to run around a track.
They carried lifelong trauma of course and I'm sure thought about it often but they move down with their lives and didn't feel a need to keep reliving what was a terrible situation.

My experience in HS with elite athletes which included an eventual NBA player and a national class HS miler was that they were amongst the more grounded athletes on the team.
