Just to be clear, I wasn't intending to voice support for the national guard presence, and I went out of my way to point out that a lot of the blame goes to the federal officials who are supposed to be prosecuting crime. While the DC police need more officers, the main problem isn't that we can't catch people; it's that we let them go. That's especially true for minors, who are responsible a lot of the recent disorder. They're engaged in performative lawbreaking for fun because they know that there are no consequences.
My main point was just that the crime is a real issue, whatever the stats say. It's not necessarily apparent to a non-resident because high income neighborhoods still look like high income neighborhoods (beer gardens and goldendoodles), but if you live there, it's going to affect your qualify of life eventually. Someone you know will be a victim. You'll get harassed or pushed by teenagers when you're minding your own business. You'll 100% hear gunshots regularly. More stores have armed guards out front, or they lock everything up.
Have I personally been robbed, assaulted, or carjacked? No. But that doesn't mean living here has been pleasant. If three teenagers surround you, threaten you, and walk for multiple blocks within a few feet of you, you're not going to feel safe.
