Additionally, are people paying attention to what's happening in college athletics, especially in our sport, it sure doesn't look like a great career move to try to get into coaching at this time.
Not to digress too much, but there aren't exactly any great career moves in the current economy. Yet, people need to find work somewhere.
I can't disagree yet I think there may be better options.
Looks kike nearly the whole roster from San Jose State entering the portal tonight. Another cut program?
Not likely. The university has finally committed to building a facility for the team and that can't be done without donations from male alums and they can't make their Title IX quotas without women's track.
Remember that last year they also had a big exodus from the program. Why? For some it was the grass being greener someplace else. Without a facility they have use a high school track a half an hour away and the overall support isn't particularly D1 either. One of the athletes who left last year told me directly that was why he left. Coach Ryan has done an excellent job building the program but that success comes at a cost. He's also not everyone's "cup of tea."
No chance they're cutting men's track. They just added it in 2019 again and their alumni base would revolt. They're cutting them because they aren't good enough. These athletes aren't scoring in the mountain west long term. The school has committed a TON of money to the program (basically a "what do you need?") kind of situation and that's why they are getting better. It is a non-distance focused program so you're going to see a lot of those people cut 800 and up.
I don't think that is many if any more than last year.
People on this board have a perverse obsession with programs being cut derived from their own sense of bitterness and inadequacy.
It is highly unusual for that many to enter the portal in one day. It's just not.
Perhaps they have decided to heavily fund track on both the men's and women's team and they are getting rid of all walk-ons and plan to give everyone new a full scholarship going forward. That is a possibility.
On the other hand, dropping the program is a possibility too. That's just a lot in one day and no, that did not happen last year. Not that many all at once.
There have been several other programs with this many entering the portal at once. None of them cut their programs. They probably had meetings all on one day or something now that they know who is going to conference and who isn't.

Actually hardly any of those athletes in the portal were mid-distance/long-distance runners. A handful of them are very good in the sprints/jumps/hurdles.
I counted 19 guys in the portal out of 33 guys on their tfrrs roster and 12 out of 27 girls.
I would imagine there are at least a few out of the 33 and 27 that are out of eligibility at the end of this year so they would not be entering the portal.
There are now 2 more guys in the portal and to your point, 2 more on their tfrrs roster that are listed as senior for outdoor track. So assuming that those 2 guys are indeed done, that is 23 out of 33 guys either in the portal or graduating.
No new girls in the portal as of now, but with the 4 that are listed as seniors, that would be 16 out of 27 girls either in the portal or graduating.

The answer on this seems to be budget cuts not program elimination.
They are making adjustments due to their budget reductions, not eliminating either program.

Lol "handful" as if there aren't only like 6 total men/women on there. Also, I think your definition of "very good" might be different than mine.

If your definition of "very good" doesn't include 10.5 in the 100m, 20.8 in the 200m, 2.08m in the high jump, etc. etc., then the problem might be you.

I'm a coach who has heard directly from 3 SJSU athletes inquiring about transferring. The school cut 90% of scholarship money from the track program to fund NIL / revenue sharing for the money sports. This is actually relevant to the coaching thread, because it's hard to imagine Charles Ryan sticking around to take that hit.
