I think what's happening is just the tip of the iceberg. LGBTQ rights, contraception access, all these things will be under attack.
People on this board seem to be forgetting what the entire idea of the law is. We have principles of justice that we all innately believe in. Eg, rules should apply to everyone equally, regardless of wealth, privilege, class, family, etc. Murder is wrong. Stealing is wrong. Etc. These all just human beliefs. We decide they matter, and we try and put them into writing, to make them as objective as possible. Which is hard to do, because the human mind is a complex device to navigate, and as time goes on, society penetrates its moral understanding of issues. Hence, gay marriage, LGBTQ rights, etc. As time goes on, our understanding of what is "just" evolves. Some things are set in stone, but other things are not. WE get to decide what should be law and what shouldn't be law.
2/3 of Americans believe in the right to abortion. This is something your country wants. The mechanisms to make that a law are failing, because the systems that make laws practicable are failing. It is a symptom of a declining democracy. If you want abortion rights, and you are one of those 2/3, you've heard the call. Your country is descending into an authoritarian regime. How much decay will you allow before you get politically active and try to change the country that is so wronging you?
Some say the Roe v Wade verdict was overreach, it should be left up to the states.
Fine. I actually think that is still overreach. Leave it up to the cities, and counties.
Actually, that's still overreach. Leave it up to individual households.
Actually, that's yet again, still overreach. Leave it up to the women. Leave the state out of it.
Today's decision correctly interpreted the Constitution.
The Supreme Court of the early 1970s would disagree.
All this decision did is to ensure that the Supreme Court will rule things constitutional, and then unconstitutional, according to the ideological whim of the Court, every couple decades, going forward. The right to abortion will be back as soon as two conservative Justices are replaced with those leaning more in favor of those rights.
Yes! Liberals will always try to impose their will - ignoring the constitution - and conservatives will always try to bring us back to the rule of law. You're very perspicatious!
It's hardly surprising that another American political institution - in this case only requiring 6 unelected officials - has taken away rights of millions of its citizens. All women. It fits well with a nation founded on such "principle", with over two hundred years of slavery. All black. Oppression is the American thing.
Breaking News:I just did some research. Much to my surprise and horror I discovered that slavery existed in other countries as well. The world is evil!
So there can be no rights enjoyed by anyone that weren't conferred by a bunch of wealthy white makes, some of whom owned slaves, 250 years ago? Welcome to the US in the late 18th century - sorry, 2022.
There are specific ways laws and constitutional amendments can be formulated. Maybe check out schoolhouse rock for more info. It’s a kids program.
We've just seen that. A Court has pretended to use the constitution to reflect the political and religious views of some of its members. And the government is largely powerless against it. Works really well.

I truly don’t understand the mental gymnastics you performed to arrive at your conclusion. I doubt a whole team of psychiatrists could follow either.
The Court says there are no abortion rights conferred by the Constitution so the SC has thrown out Roe v Wade which accorded women that right. That leaves it up to the religious nutjobs in red states to write laws denying women the right to abortion. Doesn't take a lot of gymnastics to follow that. On second thoughts, it might in your case.

Well that makes it ok the America was built on the backs of slaves. But it remains in the American mindset, when it's so easy for some of your to endorse laws that take away the rights of an entire class in your society. Sounds like another "sh*thole" country.

@chiselworth. Yes, NZ does have a Supreme Court. But unlike yours it's actually a court, not a vehicle for promoting the political views/prejudices of its members. It's also a bit hard for you to point the finger at the "racism" of other countries when yours had over two centuries of slavery, followed by a century of Jim Crow. America leading the world again.

The rights of babies were taken away - but given back. Just as the rights of slaves were taken away and given back. Wrongs can be corrected.

I'm waiting for the SC to declare masturbation unlawful. After all, there's a potential human being involved in there somewhere.
If we don't own our own bodies, contra John Locke, what could we possibly own?
Nothing. If women are not allowed to control what happens inside their womb, then please expect any stranger to demand you donate him a kidney. Refusal to use your organs to keep him alive means you must have violated his right to life!
STOP LYING. Even the most republican states are going to allow abortions in cases where the mother's health is at risk. They will also allow abortions in the case of rape or incest.
