For Mimi, using this mornings starting point Google Maps gives 1060 miles to NYC City Hall. For Sandy, 1540 miles. The person who estimated had 1016 and 1534 miles remaining, respectively. My numbers may have been off a bit. I took the total distances for both runners from the text of Sandy's web page, and then subtracted the mileage logged so far by Movescount/Strava. If you are measuring from their current locations along their intended routes to the finish, then your way of measuring is certainly more accurate.

I used Google Maps to measure remaining distance because each of them has backtracked and taken car rides to nightly stops. Sandy's total distance actually matches up well with the original distance she planned. I attribute that to her taking Pete K's route as much as possible, so she has real GPX data. Mimi based her run on Google Maps which don't account for reality as well. So it no surprise her estimate run distance is less accurate. I was surprised to see that Mimi likely has one more day to run to cover the actual distance. The Google Map to reality error is not much (~40 miles over 2838) but that adds another day.

Honestly, the "race" is getting very interesting now! Mimi still has a good-sized lead, but it looks to me like she's starting to fall apart. Loooong days of slow plodding with too few hours of rest. Her trend is sharply negative. Meanwhile Sandy is on an upward trend, and covering more miles than Mimi each day while spending less time on the road and more time resting.

It's still 1000+ miles to the finish. What's the best strategy? Ignore the other runner? Slow down a bit, and wait for the other to crack? Or increase to an unsustainably high daily mileage in hopes of drawing in the opponent and pushing her past her breaking point?

To add to the drama, Sandy ran 54 miles. One explanation is that she switched times zones yesterday. Today she started 30 minutes earlier; maybe to easy into starting one hour earlier? Or, is that a carrot for Mimi to chase tonight? The reason I say carrot is that Mimi seems to have responded to Sandy's short day by running right passed a motel 8:12 PM (Missouri time) that had parking for trucks and RVs. The motel was right next to her--impossible to not see it.

An interesting observation

Mimi: Ran ~50 miles. Got a car ride 5-6 miles from where she stopped.

Sandy: Ran 54.2 miles. Got a car ride 7-8 miles from where she stopped.

Both seemed set on running the usual mileage today.

That's debatable, I know. Mimi had a strong first week and it was slightly downhill all the time from there. Sandy's numbers are all over the place.

We are just looking at numbers here, not the real situation.

At the end it doesn't matter. They have to make decisions about their bodies in real time and do what they think is best for them to make it to New York.

I'd hardly call Sandy's numbers "all over the place," when you take into account the desert heat in the first week, the climbs through Yosemite, a blizzard in Colorado, going over the Rockies, etc. etc. (In other words, she has had consistent effort from Day 1, but the variance is almost wholly due to (1) starting out at a deliberately-conservative pace, and (2) weather/terrain conditions.

Now that she has hit the flatlands of Nebraska (with three totally flat states after that (Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana), you can expect her to be very consistent over the next few weeks.

And regarding her 55 miles today, someone in a prior post who stated the lower mileage was due to the fact she crossed into a new time zone (and therefore lost an hour) is absolutely correct.

I'll be out there with her, starting on Friday, for a week, so we'll be posting lots of Facebook Live videos and updates.

Finally, Sandy is paying no attention whatsoever to how Mimi is doing (but she wishes Mimi well and is rooting for her to run as strongly as possible). But Sandy truly has ZERO idea how Mimi is progressing or even where she is, and the subject is not discussed by her crew (seriously) . . . everyone is just focused on Sandy and hitting her own mileage goals.

Sandy seems to be following Pete K's route and plan. In another day or so she should ease into an earlier start.

I look, and likely everyone on this thread, is looking forward to some real life videos. Sandy has quit the following. Even in small towns groups of runners are joining her.

You might want to consider getting a camera stabilizer; also works with a cellphone. The ROXANT PRO video camera stabilizer is one such products that is not too expensive ($65 on Amazon). On Youtube there are several videos of people testing this product out with no stabilizer, and then with the stabilizer. I am planning on getting one myself for my next long trail race.
