Well ETSU has had several Title IX investigation and issues within women athletics. Maybe it's a CYA deal. Either way ETSU has suffered lots of budget cuts, fired coaches, and Title IX issues. If I was a betting man they are looking for a female head coach which they should given the state of things within the athletic department it's not on Watts.
Mike Smith "could" take the job because it would be a step up career-wise to go to a Power Five (soon to be Power Four) program. Most college coaches who want upward career mobility aspire to make this move.

A step up in what way? Mike Smith isn’t an assistant coach of some unheard-of mid major, I don’t think he’s concerned about “upward career mobility”. P5 isn’t the end-all be-all- there are plenty of P5 teams that are under-funded and get beat up on by mid majors all the time.

Good on him. Sounds like he values his quality of life as well. Which no place in the SEC offers. Boulder might be different…
Smith is like Royalty at NAU. He is treated how Head Football coaches are treated in Power 5. Flagstaff is an awesome place to live and raise a family. He makes plenty of money and can load up on distance and still win Big Sky Track Conf titles. Everything is in place and is easy to continue the dominance. Why would you want the pressure of SEC and live in a crappy place in the south or crazy Boulder?? It's a no brainer why he stays and will continue to stay there til he retires likely.
