Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

I went to see an orthopedic surgeon today about a sports hernia. He told me that sports hernias do not exist. Is this true? He fondled me a bit and reported that I did not have a hernia. He ordered a CT scan to get confirmation.

I am concerned b/c he did most of the things people on these messageboards reported and these people were misdiagnosed.

It's pretty clear that I either have a (sports hernia) or an ab strain. Doc said that if I have a hernia that it's an iguinal one. Problem is that I am a serious runner (mid 2:30s for 26.2) and would like to race the fall season. I'm not elite but it's my passion and I just plain need to run. For the last 2 months I've been running with lower ab/upper groin (left side) pain. I haven't been able to do any hill or speed workouts--just logging slow miles.

Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I no longer competetively run but was a bad D1 middle distance runner a decade ago, so I am familiar with this board and in particular this thread.

There seems to be a great deal of knowledge on groin pain here so I will give this a shot, any help would be appreciated.

Roughly 8 years ago I thought I had a hernia in my right inguinal area from helping a my now wife move. I believe I pushed the lump back in and the pain was immediately gone.

Not sure when I started to notice but sometime thereafter I developed a very mild, dull, weakness or pain in the same right inguinal area.

I only notice the pain when sitting or laying down, not sure if it is so minor that I just feel it when I am idle or if it truely is only when I am sitting/laying.

No lump, no pain when coughing or working out, and no sign of hernia in an ultrasound or ct scan.

I am tired of living with this daily and really would like to get it figured out, but not sure what to do.

Any advice? Thanks for you time.

I'm not a 'runner'. I walk, run and sprint 2x/day. While doing my routine one day, I noticed that I had pain in my lower right ab, very low. Odd. What happened? After researching appendix and hernia, I was at a loss.

It took me days to put 2 and 2 together. BTW, I'm not your normal FEMALE. I do stupid stuff, like trying to flip over a lat bar at a full stretch. Ding-ding. 2+2=4.

It felt like a muscle strain, so I thought it'd go away soon. I kept running and the pain grew worse. It has expanded all across the lower abdomen now. So, I thought ovaries, but this pain is near the surface of my skinny body, does not feel 'internal'.

I did notice something ODD ... When I run (or walk) backwards up the hills, which is what I do, I noticed that I feel no pain. Has anyone tried this?

Now, at about 5 weeks with no sign of improvement, I started searching for answers and found this forum. YAY. Geez, guys. I hope I can get this better soon on my own. I steer clear of doctors and knives. This is a DRAG.

There are a zillion posts here and I don't have time to read all of them. I'm wondering if anyone has CURED this issue ON THEIR OWN. Anyone?

I have yet to read about anyone who has resolved a sports hernia or any other hernia without surgery. Mine started in 2009 and just a few months ago the doc said it may be a sports hernia. He started me on meds and now PT.

It's going on almost 4 years with this issue. I can only imagine that surgery will be my final option.

Hello All - I've been dealing with chronic pain in my groin/pelvic area for 2 years now. I have seen several orthopedic doctors, sports medicine, urologists, neurologists, and general practitioners but no one has been able to give me a diagnosis.

Like many of you, I've brought up 'Sports Hernia' to my doctors who have blown off the suggestion. I've been checked for a regular hernia more times than I can count.

After my injury it took me months to get back to where I could walk, drive a car, and lift small objects. However, once I start feeling better I always end up doing something to 're-injure' myself, usually lifting something heavier than I should. Each time this happens I end up in pain for months again.

I have been trying to find someone in the Detroit area that is familiar with sports hernias but havent found anyone yet. I'm thinking I should go to Dr. Meyers and am going to contact his office this week. I've never gone to a doctor out of my area before and was wondering how it works. How many times do you have to fly there? Can you get diagnosed and operated on in one trip? Did you need to get a referral for him?

Any advice/info about your eperience with Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia or another good sports hernia doc would be greatly appreciated.

it is tender around the groin anyway if you press on it!! its doesnt mean you need to have your inguinal ligament released and a hernia repair! when there isnt a hernia!!

He knows he can get away with doing it to people !! and you can do nothing about it cause doctors are well protected when it comes to suing them!!

all lyold wants to do is do his shity procedure on you and then shove you onto someone else!!! its a truely selfish act!!

I have cured my sports hernia 95%. Just a mild occaisional ache now but not stopping me doing anything I did before. The secret was to NOT stop exercising. Two independent experts told me the worst thing to do is to rest up - if you do the scar tissue will form tight and then you've had it. The second surgeon told me to take ibruprofen for a month while exercising every day (certain pilates exercises, cycling, walking, and then gentle straight line runnning). This apparently keeps the swelling down and the exercising ensures the muscle doesn't heal in a contracted state. Makes sense to me and seems to have saved me going down the surgery route.

Oh, and the other huge thing...I got my SH after running with very tight and sore adductors. These were stiff and tight for several months after as well and the first 'leading expert' in SH surgery told me that I could get a series of injections or surgery to lengthen them. I was giving that serious consideration and then I came across a foam roller - and five minutes later (literally) the adductors were sorted. I've been foam rolling ever since and I'm never going to stop now. Proper sports massage is even better I guess but one session costs the same as a decent roller - so I'm going to stick with that. Give it a go if you have stiff adductors - you might be amazed at the results. And for me it was a crucial part of the healing process - if you have tight muscles linked to your groin then you probably won't be able to heal properly.

So sort the problem that caused the SH in the first place, keep the swelling down and keep exercising - that would be my advice. Good luck!

I suffered a SH 3 years ago had surgery 2 years ago and still suffer daily pain that is usually around the 3/10-5/10 in pain up to 8/10 in pain. I had 3 tears in my fascia 1 cm, 2, cm and a 4cm tear with at least 2 branches of the ilioinguinal nerve entrapped. The surgery in Montreal used a mesh implant, and removed 2 branches of ilioinguinal nerve. The pain before surgery would bring about new 10's on my pain scale after being examined by doctors who would stick their finger into the inguinal ring. I guess the manoeuvre would aggravate the entrapped nerves and would send me off the charts screaming.The pain I experience now is not nearly as bad as then but I am at wits end and cannot continue to live like this. I must have another surgery or my whole world will collapse. Nothing gets your attention like the pain of your testicle being slapped by a steel ruler with every heartbeat, at least that's how bad it was for me. The worst of it is not necessarily the pain one experiences but rather doctors disbelief of the injury.

I've been messing around with a SH for close to 3 years now. Tried lots of rest, lots of PT, 2 cortisone injections, and no relief. Was just referred to Dr. Brown for surgery. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who's had the procedure done by Dr. Brown. Was the operation successful? What was the recovery like? Both docs have been very optimistic about complete or near-complete recovery, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually been through it.

This is a very late response to your question, but I recently had surgery with Mark Zoland. He's a great guy, good bedside manner, and he was very knowledgeable. I can't speak to the success of his repair just yet, I am only 11 weeks out of surgery. I can say I initially felt excellent, but after a rigorous weekend I have been in some pain around the inguinal ligament for roughly 10 days. I was treated for a labral tear at the same time by Dr. Bharam. I will post back in a few months.

Just to give a little background I lived with the discomfort for 2.5 years before surgery, and tried everything possible. Lots of stretching, particularly my iliopsoas and adductors provided me long breaks from symptoms provided I remained sedentary, which I was not ready to do. Tennis ball therapy on my piriformis was also quite beneficial.

could you tell me more about your regimen? when i read your post, it was too similar to my experience. my abductors have been so screwed since acl surgery 2 years ago. they were like metal cords for a while, have gotten a bit better, but still in bad shape. i've been running through them, though.

what kind of stretching did you do? what kind of excercises exactly? i'd love to know,
