Actually Kidd was a year older than Lindgren was when they ran their fast races at Compton. Kidd was spectacular though.

It's sad to think that Kidd retired in his early 20's. He could certainly have gotten over his injuires in time...we all do. Why did he quit? It's hard to imagine someone so accomplished and labored in the sport walking away so soon. I couldn't dream of it.

There was literally no money in it back then. Might sound harsh, but that probably had a lot to do with it.

This is malmo's thread, and he has yet to declare who is the most obscure great runner. I nominate Belaine Densimo, former holder of the world best in the marathon. Even though Densimo lives in Boston, he is almost completely under the radar. And he wasn't mentioned until near the (current) end of this thread.

That's Michel Jazy. And he's not nearly as obscure as some of the other French 1,500-meter specialists of that era, like Michel Bernard, Jacques Boxberger, or Jean Wadoux.

I'm sorry to divert from the topic, but I believe I was at the same camp in Colorado the year before you in '72, between my sophomore and junior years in HS. Daws was there with a proto-type of the Nike waffle. Walt Stack was there as well. At the end of camp we ran the Pike's Peak Marathon (ascent) then hitchhiked back to Jersey. The camp was sponsored by the Pueblo YMCA. I also remember all we did was eat, run, sleep, and run.

Yeah, that was it! I was at that camp in 1973. Walt Stack and Ron Daws were there again in 1973. So was J.J. Griffin (8:57 two mile in HS). Daws and I played a lot of foosball. I showed him the July issue of "Athletics Weekly" that had Dave Bedford on the cover setting his world record in the 10,000.

I must have created that link when I tried to post some photos of me rock climbing in the Grand Tetons last summer.
Interesting thought I had on Cheryl Bridges. When she moved to Minnesota in the early '70s, I believe she was the Women's World Record holder for the Marathon in 2:49. Our training group, which consisted of some sub-2:20 marathoners, plus one Olympian (Daws), was very flattered, honored that Cheryl wanted to train with us!! (She was also "easy on the eyes" which made repeat miles on the track more pleasant!) Cheryl definitely held her own with the track stuff and long runs. The only complaint that we had was that we couldn't f$%t and do other "guy" things because of Cheryl's presence!!! She definitely refined our running behaviors. (It was our hang-up, probably not Cheryl's, as we just were not used to having a woman run with us.) Is this a problem now, I wonder??!! It's great to see her daughter run so well!
