Shoot for the standard which is dam fast. Anything better is fantastic.
I mean, Samuel ran 26:53 with a solid kick a year ago, and Blanks was always better in 10k XC and the 5k. Both were in great form indoors.
Anything under the standard is ultimately icing on the cake, but just as you ask for more respect for 26:50, also recognize how good Blanks and Samuel already are, and they’re in maybe the fastest 10k race in the world. I wouldn’t say sub-26:50 is super likely for either of them just bc it’s so fast and so much has to go right, but last year we saw a ton of falling off the pace before a huge sprint the last 1k where like 10 guys ran 26:52-59. But the year before that, recent 12:51/54 guys Kincaid and Klecker went for it and neither broke 27.
Idk I think we’ll see some surprising times, the field is better than it was 2 years ago. Sub-26:50 probably just depends on good pacing
Yeah, I was off but not by much. I almost adjusted it to sub-26:55, which also would’ve been wrong for Blanks at least, but, man, we just needed slightly faster pacing and for longer. Habtom was right there.
Is Mike smith dumb? A week after Nico’s 5k/3k indoor NCAA double, he raced The Ten last year.
Cornfield is having Elise do the same except the 10k first, and she’s getting guaranteed pay.
Someone have something against Cornfield? A lot of people seemingly do…jealous?
I don’t believe it was a jealous remark. Cornfield killed her with too many races indoors and is now repeating it. I’m a fan of Elise, but she seemed shot tonight.
unlike the mens race, Cranny was pretty much on her own with Keladi having no interest in doing any of the hard work. look at the splits, as Cranny slowed Keladi slowed with her and stayed right behind her.
meanwhile in the mens race there were 8 guys up front, constantly trading off the lead. if someone got tired they fell to the back of the group and slowed their pace until they recovered.
i think Crannys fitness was fine (her sprint attesting to that) its just so difficult doing these 10K's solo.

sub 26:50 was there for Bekele. And maybe 1 or two others could have dropped another 5 seconds in tow.

Maybe, however she ran 7k solo during her PB 31:15 race a couple years ago.

I was a little surprised Graham didn’t have a bit more. Granted, he led a fair chunk. It does make me wonder about NCAA Cross if Habtom hadn’t fallen. Still money on Graham in a 5,000, but perhaps 10,000 and up Samuel is better.

Kincaid and Klecker didn’t go for sub-27, the standard was 27:10 that year. So that’s all they were going for, no need to go for more and risk fading.
The best workout is a race. Run the 10k. Do some shakeout strides on Tuesday/Wed, race hard next weekend.
Makes a lot of sense. Get in shape to pick up the standard and rack up some $ at the first meet. With the new shoes, it's not like her cavles will be sore for a week.
Too many coaches out there who believe in "magic workouts." They really want to believe the runners will be irreparably harmed if they have to take a couple weeks away from their well crafted training plans.
Not to say there's one size fits all there. But back to back weekends are fine.
I’m not sure if anyone has pointed this out but a significant amount of the hoka pros have been wearing Nike spikes lately. It was pretty obvious here with Adrian wearing the dragonflys without the logo. And a few other pros at the meet. BUT the bigger story is habtom Samuel’s spikes aren’t world athletics approved. They are over 20mm in stack and I mean technically could get DQ’d for this. He was wearing the HOKA cieloflyx which has 25mm of stack.
Those Hokas are a development shoe approved for all events through January 2026, except for World Athletics Series events or the Olympics. (edit: unless you're saying the cieloflyx is different than the cieloflyx elite.) You can check here:

The Ten is a time trial. it's all about getting the world standard - no athlete cares about actually winning the race. Graham got the standard - mission accomplished. meanwhile, look at Elise Cranny, she won her race and in her post interview said how disappointed she was

There is prize money actually. I’m assuming the college kids can’t collect beyond expenses. But Blanks finished 3rd of other finishers. I’m assuming it’s something like 5,000, 2,500, 1,000 so maybe a 4,000 difference. It might be more like twice this because there aren’t many pro races in the meet. Not huge money but these guys aren’t multimillionaires for the most part.

Did it work indoors for her ?
Grant Fisher is definitely an exception - his coach doesn't even live in the same state. Instead of a full-time coach, he uses him as an advisor. As for Elise Cranny, it seems she will go with Mike Smith. Her choice of Mike Smith assistant was somewhat unexpected and strange, leading to speculation that this move is part of a plan for her to join the Nike Swoosh Track Club under Mike Smith's leadership in the near future. It's clear that she could benefit from more structured training.
The cielo flyx elite is a different spike to the ones habtom was wearing. Olin Hacker was one of the only athletes wearing the flyx elite from the hoka sponsored athletes. Id post a picture comparing the two but I don’t think it lets me.

I am surprised too, though he achieved his main goal, and I agree that Samuel is likely better at 10,000+.
I thought this race would go sub-26:50 with multiple runners there, but I was wrong. It’s also very early.

...
For some athletes it tough but Almaz AYANA always ran MAJORITY of the race solo in championship races she won. Remember her Olympic 10000m WR and the World Championship 5000m in which last 3000m was 8:20.2.
Surely Cranny could have run a little faster with more help with pacing and less wind but it's not required when you're truly 100% ready.
Adriaan Wildschut, with the standar already done, ran a solid race. He went to get more experience at that pace. Was in great position throughout, and with the 'weakness' of outright speed took it out for a 61 sec second last lap. He will refine these things
I have felt that he should even be a bit more confident to make the pace a little bit more 'borderline' to nullify the 'sprinters', and/or even put the foot down a bit earlier.
Longer term though, I think he would have more potential for medal at marathon distance
