My questions about the fickle hiring process. Is it ever ok for a candidate to reach out to head coaches or ADs if they’re interested in the position that they’re applying for? Also, Is it must have for someone’s network to be strong enough to have people willing to make a call or shoot an email?

If you can find a connection with someone who knows the HC that helps if it's an assistant coach gig. If it's a HC gig than you would need to find a connection to the Assistant AD or person over XC/TF. The AD definitely doesn't want to get unsolicited emails about XC/TF.

I've emailed a HC before when I have applied for an open position that is passed the initial IRD. I don't always trust that the hiring team will see new applications when a position has been open for a while passed the IRD. I feel like it shows a desire/enthusiasm for the role you've applied for but for all I know it's really annoying. Never directly had any negative feedback tho.

In DI, if you or someone else isn't reaching out to the AD or Sport Admin for a head coaching job, you aren't getting the job. Or they reached out to you.

as far as I can tell from tangentially knowing him, he wanted to leave Marywood for some combination of team culture issues/lack of facilities and support/being discouraged by not being able to adequately train for himself

What evidence do you have that he was fired? I'm not saying he wasn't because I don't have any information, but that is a terrible thing to insinuate without any real evidence. People choose to leave the coaching ranks all the time because of the deplorable pay/conditions/support/hours, etc. I quit my last head coaching position because the athletic director was so terrible. And it's not like I was the only one who felt that way. Within one year of when I quit, all but one other head coach in the department had quit and even my replacement quit after just one year (and that other head coach left within 2 years when they finally landed a much better gig). Again, I'm not saying that's what happened in this case, but just pointing out that people leave coaching, especially in D3 where XC/track coaches are overworked and underpaid by large margins, for lots of legitimate reasons all the time.

Ya coaching is getting tougher and pay isn't getting higher. Guys leaving to get paid their worth. No bashing is necessary. Its a young mans game anymore

Yah that is what some people like to do on this board is bash other coaches. Make accusations about them on a public board with no name and say things that could damage their reputation and future. Get's old. Not sure why it's allowed on here, but it's known for that. A place to start rumors and allegations. Let's lift each other up!

I would say it is a young man's games as well (25–35-year-olds) Maybe not at the D1 or high D2 level, but I can see where it could be a possibility for a person 55-65 to coach after they retired from another career that has them set up financially (JUCO, NAIA)

Have had just too many people saying Mike Smith is being given a pro group in Flagstaff from Nike and will not be coaching college starting next year. They just promoted long-time assistant to associate head coach, so might be trying to set him up for the job?
