I'm not going to give an entire history lesson, but you can read examples from the link I provided. Slaves were able to use trade skills they learned to earn money, improve their quality life, but their freedom, etc. I'm not sure why so many are trying to revise history by denying this happened.

What stood out to me was that he endured beatings and worked very hard at whatever task he was given. Getting the 'opportunity' to negotiate to pay someone for your own freedom which was stolen from you? Or for the freedom of family members who had THEIR freedom stolen? That doesn't sound like opportunity. It sounds like being the victim of kidnapping and extortion.
