I am missing something. If you are inside that...thing...banging as hard as you can, 4km deep, there is no way any sound would be detected at the surface. I mean they have difficulty to communicate if they want to, how would the opposite work so well?
His exact quote was: "When I started the business, one of the things you’ll find, there are other sub operators out there, but they typically have gentlemen who are ex-military sub-mariners, and they — you’ll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys. I wanted our team to be younger, to be inspirational."
I'm sure the 18 year old that's currently dying a slow horrific death at the bottom of the Atlantic wishes there were more 50 year old white guys involved right about now.
He didn't want experienced submariners because they bring all that pesky red tape with them. What he's also quoted as saying is that existing regulatory bodies are "an anathema to rapid innovation" who have "slowed down innovation". He doesn't sound like a quotas guy, quite the oppose, he sounds arrogant and like he has no respect for any rules.
He's a mini-Musk - get rid of those old, slow government agencies and being in ME with my ineffective pals and touchscreen control pads. He even quotes SpaceX and Blue Origin as contemporaries.
The former head of safety was fired because he was a whistleblower, not because he was a white 50 year old.
Yes, the race baiting here is gratuitous. The CEO’s remarks seemed more like putting a positive PR spin on what seems like a “move fast and break things” approach.

Sonar (sound signals) is the only thing that works at those depths. Unlike EM that can travel in vacuum, sound travels literally by vibrating the medium, so just banging on a five-inch thick carbon fiber and titanium wall can send a “still alive” signal through the vibrating water.
How is it race baiting? The CEO stated he wanted to hire people based on their race - and that he didn't want to hire people who weren't 'intersectional'. Only an insane woke would not agree.
You have 5 people literally dying a terrifying, torturous, horrible death as we sit here, and the internet is full of people denigrating them, hoping they won't be saved, and spitting on their names.
The internet has truly turned humans into barbarous wretches. It is pure evil.
David Pogue, a tech journalist who’s taken the Titan ride and sounds like he knows what he’s talking about makes a case at 8:09 that it was pretty hopeless even as of Sunday based on the nature of signal loss.
Sounds like the guy running this operation down there is just another rich kid who was trying to do something for which he's lacking real ability, expertise, or knowhow. Or if Horatio Cane were cracking on him, "he was clearly out of his depth."

Ok, good for you, go home now. Most of us are here just to gossip about the missing sub.
This isn't an airline, it's home made submersible that hasn't been accredited by any engineering authority anywhere in the world. He didn't want Nobel Prize winning engineers because the dude's got an ego larger than his bank balance and thinks he's clever enough himself. Nothing to do with quotas, he's a cowboy that'll hire and fire who he wants.

The sub operator in this is literally a 50s year old white guy and it still happened.

I don't think anyone here is hoping they won't be saved. We all hope they will be saved. But we can still be critical of the company and CEO that never approved and certified the submersible and the billionaires who never even bothered to check if the craft was properly vetted.

NOT a sub - a sub can be underwater for extending periods of time - months even. This vehicle needs to be launched from a ship and has a limited time to be underwater. Once launched - it needs to be brought back up kinda soon. A sub can cruise underwater for weeks on end.

Only on these forums would a thread like this delve into race and thinly veiled aspersions regaring the inferiority of certain races. The usual suspects are here as well.

I am a billionaire who has made a fortune knowing everything that needs to be known about my industry/sector. My son and I are going down in a craft that has never been approved or certified and we will go down 2 and a half miles. Is there something wrong here?
My wife is from Northern Ireland. She told me why the Titanic sank. It was built in Belfast and only Protestants were employed at the shipyard. They scrawled anti-Catholic graffiti all over the interior of the ship. The rest of the story was the work of God.

The internet didn't cause this, although it maybe reveals it more, and possibly incites various things. Humans have always varied like this. You get the good... and the not so good. I would bet that more people than not want the people who are trapped to be saved, so take that as you will - although I do understand your point as some of the posts in mainstream media are atrocious.

I want them saved, but that's probably not going to happen.
This incident is a chance to crap on wealthy people paying $250K to visit a gravesite for the purpose of one-upping their wealthy friends, hence the invective.

I just learned that a manned submersible, the Trieste, went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the 1960s. Depth of over 36,000 feet. It is insane that anything can handle that level of pressure.
My father was an engineer on the Trieste II program. We lived in the submarine community for my entire childhood until I went to college.
The CEO is an idiot for many reasons.
First of all, the guy you want is the ex-military submariner. This would be a guy who has a lifetime of experience and training to prepare him/her for emergencies and who gained this experience in a highly disciplined and rigid environment (aka the military). Over their career, young person dumbassery is drilled out of them and they become highly experienced and competent. I don't know why someone wouldn't find that 'inspirational'.
Second, there are plenty of guys in the submarine world who aren't white guys. Pretty sure the sub world has plenty of blacks, hispanics, women, etc.
He should have found himself a retired submarine chief. He probably could have hired the best guy in the US Navy for somewhere between $200k - $300k.
