She won't break Moore's record unless she comes back for the 5th year. I think she should turn pro after this season, regardless of how Iowa finishes in the tournament.
On the other hand, I think Bueckers should come back next season. UConn will probably have a better team if she returns and Fudd gets healthy.
She is 514 points from tying the Division I women's scoring record of 3,527 points set by Kelsey Plum, and she trails LSU legend Pete Maravich’s all-time record of 3,667 points by 654.
Clark has become the all-time career assist leader in both Iowa and Big Ten in the same game. Samantha Logic (the previous school record holder) was in attendance. She also became the 5th leading scorer of all-time by passing Lorri Bauman and Patrcia Hoskins.
Here are fun facts. There are 15 players with more than 3000 points. Maya Moore has the second most assists in that group with 544. Clark now has 904.
There are 13 players with more than 900 assists. Sabrina Ionescu has the second most points with 2562. Clark now has 3149.
And Iowa has 16 more regular season games plus Big Ten tournament and NCAA.
in the same season in the last 25 years. pretty good company... especially since NBA players get an extra 8 minutes to accomplish that. and its only December...
Also, I know this whole year is going to be a coronation for Clark and deservedly so, but we simply HAVE to acknowledge the mind blowing things Hannah Hidalgo is doing in South Bend. Just a freshman and averaging 24/6.5/6. But the most incredible thing about her is that she is averaging SIX STEALS A GAME! What!?? Thats incredible. No other players are even close to her on that stat. I know she was a top ten recruit coming out of high school but I never saw this coming. And dont get me started on JuJu...
I saw Hidalgo in McDonald's All-American game (I think that's what it was), and thought she was so fun to watch. Imagine how good ND backcourt will be with healthy Miles and Citron.
Maybe in a few years, we will be talking about countdown to her NCAA steal record. (The current record is 649 held by Chastadle Barrs of Lamar.)
The NCAA has secured a new media rights deal with ESPN, significantly increasing the value from its previous contract. The deal covers 21 women's and 19 men's sports and notably includes national championship events.
$115 million annually... Almost a Billion in total... Guess that Kaplan Hecker number was a slight UNDER estimate then. This will sure make the claim that the womens NCAA Tournament cant generate any money harder to make going forward.
I love that this thread, originally intended to bash womens sports, has now come full circle. That the thing many of us kept pointing out nine months ago and was told no chance has come to fruition. I consider this moment an official victory moment over the "nobody cares about womens sports" trolls that pollute the internet and especially letsrun. Doesnt mean they wont ignore this and keep saying it but every time they do it will be clear they have no legs to stand on and that everyone knows it.

The deal is for 21 women's and 19 men's championships, although estimated 57% of total value is attributed to women's basketball.
This means women's basketball will continue to subsidize men's track & field and cross country in the next eight years.

A separate deal would have been nice but as I see it this happened because of last year's NCAA Tournament numbers and this group of sports is largely riding on womens basketball now (and maybe womens Volleyball). Do any of the other sports make any money at all? If not Im dubious about how meaningful that 57% figure is. And anyway there is something satisfying about a womens sport being seen as a financial anchor for more than a dozen mens sports.

After women's basketball, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, women's gymnastics and men's hockey, men's lacrosse are the top six sports in TV ratings. I think those are the only "money-making" sports. (Note four of the seven are women's sports.)
Kaplan's report suggested a possible separate deal for baseball/softball. But if you remove women's b-ball, baseball and softball, it would be hard to sell the rest of the package to any network.
Official NCAA press release here. A few important notes.
The new package deal will cover 40 championships, including cross country and indoor track. (The entire list of 40 championships is in the press release.)
Women's basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, as well as softball, baseball and FCS are six sports that have guaranteed airtime on ABC. (Note four of the six are women's championships.)
There will be revenue distribution units for women's basketball, although it is a bundled contract.
ESPN and the NCAA have reached a new, eight-year agreement including domestic rights to a record 40 NCAA championships and international rights to those same NCAA championships plus the Division I men’s basketball tournament.
Im curious what "revenue distribution units" means exactly. Does that mean they will start paying the teams that make the Tournament like they do with the mens teams?

Yes. The details are still in discussion as the press release says.
This is the reason WBCA pushed for a stand along contract. So they got what they wanted after all.
My guess is no! The stands are all empty. It’s comical. Yet espn wants to promote womens basketball to no end. Kinda sad. Women play inferior basketball to men and the games are boring
booooo
WoW, really. First, if you are a woman of course you want to see them play. Second if you are a man you should want to see them play because of their looks. But even if you do not care about how they look, 99% of you should admit, THEY ARE BETTER THAN YOU COULD EVER DREAM ABOUT BECOMING!

Women's sports is no anchor for any men's sports.
The Sooners, at the University of Oklahoma, brought in over $159M in sports revenue last year. However, their expenses were nearly identical, only creating a net profit of $150,000. And going a layer deeper… The women’s softball team at Oklahoma is one of the most successful teams in college sports, regardless of gender. They have 5 NCAA championships in just the last decade and consistently pack out their stadium. But once you dig into their balance sheet you realize it’s not all roses and butterflies. Last year, the University of Oklahoma women’s softball program paid out $4,322,219 in expenses (including $1M to head coach Patty Grosso) while making $2,418,462 in total revenue. The program lost money, $-1,903,757 to be exact. So one of the highest-earning women’s teams in all of collegiate athletics still loses nearly $2M a year. Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s athletic department spends nearly 10x more on football with expenses at $43M. But it makes sense because last year they turned a profit of $51M after totaling almost $94M in revenue. Let’s carry on.
