I have an actual real life example. My gf needs a car and she (me too) loves the cute fiat 500. Its enough for the city and easy to get around.

The new gas version costs 16000 € and the electric one 29 000. Even if electricity would be free and the electric one never needed repairs the gas one would probably still be cheaper (better).

Asshattery aside and driven largely by the recent spike in gas prices and supply limited new cars, a 5-year-old Bolt with a new battery will likely sell for about its original list price. It's not selling as new, but it hasn't depreciated from "new".

I’d agree with that. EVs aren’t the better option in every scenario (yet).

I don't know what models and options are available on the 500 where you live, so it's hard to compare. I'll just say that you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Usually when an automaker builds an EV version of a gas powered car, they give the EV version a premium makeover. So you have this 16000 € version that is likely a stripped model with manual transmission. And the EV version will be more comparable to the top of the line gas powered model.

It just depends on what you want. If the two you mention are your only two choices then I agree that you probably won't make up 13000 € buying the EV.

Specs are very important. The Tesla gives you more car for your money.

And I do like that the software in the Tesla is much more advanced, reliable, and user friendly than any other car.

The drain plug in the frunk is nice if you want to fill it up with ice and use it as a cooler. Other than that, the Tesla does more of what I want a car to do.

You don't want to talk about specs because you know it makes the Mach-e look inferior, which it is.

The biggest issue by far right now for EVs is the grid cannot support the influx of new electricity demand caused by EV charging. Since 80% of charging is done at home, the average home uses between 20 and 30% more electricity for each EV they own, which has to come from the grid (absent distributed generation like solar panels).

The grid has seen massive underinvestment in infrastructure over the last decade+ in terms of power generation capacity, but specifically transmission capabilities. Even if you could magically drop 30 million EVs in the US, with the necessary amount of chargers, it would collapse the grid. Grid infrastructure upgrades don't exactly win you votes either, its kind of an out of sight out of mind thing, so the political will to make the necessary investments isn't really there.

This transition is gonna take way longer than some of the more optimistic forecasts think. There is literally 0 shot that 100% of cars sold in 2032 will be EVs, like some posters have said. There are many moving parts here that tend to get missed by people that think you can snap your fingers and decarbonize immediately.

You are correct that the grid needs to be modernized. The new infrastructure law and the Inflation Reduction Act both help address those concerns.

Thankfully, we won't magically drop 30 million EVs in the US tomorrow. But I am confident that in time, the grid will be built out to handle the extra load. It will be just like when air conditioners became all the rage.

Hmm. The Boulder police seem to prefer Tesla over the Mach-e. But they want to give Ford a chance, so they will try one Mach-e if Ford will ever deliver it.
