That’s a gross misreading of the situation, bordering on paranoid delusion.

You’re not as fast as him, so you must defer to him in all situations, and defend him no matter what he says or does. Got it.

Having said that, I’m starting to feel a bit bad for him. Who here among us hasn’t been a jackass on the internet and later come to regret it? And it is a bit sad that this thread is so incredibly popular (says the guy posting in it). Shows how petty and catty us LetsRunners really are.

I honestly can't change how you think because we're going to go in circles. I will respond to the gross interpretation comment. It's not too farfetched when you think about it. Instagrammers and youtubers have a lot of fans. But it's not because of their athletic accomplishments. It's because of the personality they display online. Some of it isn't real. But yes I'll agree with you us Letsrunners can be petty. Me included. The worst part is many of us are guys who act like high school girls. Again me inclided. But we can't give respect to an accomplished athlete and try to read into absolutely everything he does? The sad part is that's part of any sport, you get haters. But lets he 100% honest all of those grilling him wish they had his accomplishments. There's nothing wrong with admitting it.

It’s not impossible to simultaneously respect accomplishments and criticize immature actions. “You wish you had a gold medal” is no defense of insecurity.

Cole Hocker might set some amazing PRs. True.

But, people have to remember that in order to get Olympic Gold, Hocker has to stay healthy, beat any of the upcoming African runners AND beat either of a combination of Drew Hunter, Luis Grijalva, Cooper Teare, Nico Young and others like Evert Silva to get that gold.

I wish him success but he is in the "will be/may be" Olympic Champion category.

Centro is in the "IS" category.

What Christman did is weird for all parties involved because it wasn't really his place to post what he did.

Very well stated. Literally, 4:45 milers talking shît to the olympic champion. The “my mans” type of stuff just makes it all the more cringey.

Centro’s problem is that he makes himself too available. He exposes his life too much to the public (especially high schoolers), and they feel that they’re entitled to act in such a fashion.

His best reaction would have been to say, “young guys coming up fast! Go Ducks”, and left it at that.

I’m telling you, that Evert Silva kid is poison. On the other hand, Crawford just seems like a nerdy kid that found some acceptance in a group; and is doing/saying dumb things to stay accepted.

I agree Centro makes himself too vulnerable, but hey we're all only human. Not many of us can say how we'd react if we were in Centro's place because we're not as talented or accomplished as him. And I hope people reading this don't take that personal. It's just reality. I only follow Letsrun for my running news because that's enough for me. But what I've seen on instagram is a whole nother level of high school girl-ish pettiness and passive aggressiveness. I can be petty and passive aggressive but dang I didn't think I could be beaten at that game so badly. I thought the fans from female pop stars were toxic, track is on another level.

The fact of the matter is Centro outclassed and outkicked the field wire to wire. He went straight to the rail and lead the whole thing. He was challenged several times and held his position. Clearly that was his plan going into the Olympics and he executed flawlessly.

He was the only kicker to run a clear final 400m. He had a clear shot to the finish, no bodies in his way, he didn’t have to work his way through the field, etc.

Having the fastest pr or season best doesn’t guarantee victory. Go back and watch other 1500 finals, upsets happen. El G was the recent WR holder when Ngeny out kicked him. How many others have been out kicked, boxed in, tripped, moved too soon?

How many other collegiates have we seen drop amazing early/mid season times at no name meets only to get injured, fizzle out, struggle, not win and be forgotten... The list is long.

But this is the heart of the problem. This class of runners from Oregon, and Grijalva, and Silva, and Hunter, and Young and possibly others are almost invariably going to have a faster 1500 PR than Matt Centrowitz. They know that, and deep down, likely so does he. But the issue is diminishing Olympic Gold over a time. It never made sense to be why people had to like Webb OR Hall OR Ritz OR Rupp, and it doesn't make sense why the Oregon kids are making people choose to respect Olympic Gold OR a faster time. I don't see why Centro can't be the champion AND they can be faster.
