First thing I want to say is Gary is a great coach. He has done a tremendous job building a program there.
That said, aren't a good many of the people on the program there getting financial aid due to financial hardship? Maybe not athletic scholarships but still not paying full boat for school.
If I am wrong please let me know but what I have written above is how I understand it to be.
Yes, Chico State doesn't have a ton of athletic scholarship but basically everyone going there is paying as little as you can for school or has everything completely covered. The people who emphasize how much chico does with so little (regarding scholarship) are being overdramatic.. The Cal State system is essentially free or the cheapest you can pay for school in CA. That said, yes, they are better than all the crappy D1's in CA. Chico, Azusa, and Pitzer are better than almost all the D1's aside from SLO, Stanford, CBU, and maybe one other. Pull up any race where those schools have run against the CA D1's. It's not due to short courses, cross comparing, it's head to head over the last decade+
