If they’re qualified.. hiring a female with 0 experience over other applicants with years of success is stupid. If a male candidate with no experience is hired over a qualified female applicant, that’s also stupid, and would probably be tied up in a lawsuit.
Hire the best person for the job. Period.
If that's all we ever did, then we'd mostly only have old white male coaches to coach a sport of young diverse students. Diversity of thought, age, experience, and representation does have a positive impact on a program and its athletes. Plus its good for then future of the sport to develop new talent. There is more to putting together a great staff than just a collection of individual resumes.
I completely disagree.
These "Old White Males" will eventually age out and be replaced by younger men and women of various ages and race. That being said, ANY coaching candidate regardless of age and or race not qualified to fit the needs of an athletic program should NOT be hired. Many programs with "Older" coaches have younger and more diverse assistants than previous years. The reason being, is that there are more young coaching candidates showing interest in coaching. As the sport evolves over time the so-called younger generation will begin to replace the old guard. This takes time and is unavoidable. Another factor is the success of the program. If the "Old White Male" is successful and has been for a number of years in addition to having valuable experience, why replace him? It's the athletic director of the program that should be evaluating the coach each year and determining whether they should be retained or not. Are you winning or losing? To simply upend a program for the sake of diversity is wrong! These so-called "Old White Males" have logged many hours, days, months, and years of coaching and to be kicked to the curb by a young inexperienced wannabe coach will not be good for the success of the sport or the athlete. I'm all in for having diversity on a coaching staff, just be sure to know your sh^t and bring something to the table.
Is this a formality, given they also just brought in new coach in Aug?
What new coach?
If you just got hired at UCSB you might get to finish the year. A new coach / director will bring in their own people. They might let you finish your contract, but you’ll be out in June

This is why Shayla left the distance job. She knew the director was going to leave and she would be out. Hopefully the new distance coach is OK with being at USSB this year only.

This is patently false. You may be surprised who UCSB has been calling for this job…

The new coach is legit and is a good guy and will be there awhile. The program will definitely improve.
Shayla on the other hand will be bouncing around looking for her "Dream" gig after she wears out her welcome in Iowa. Probably should spend more time on trying to be a better coach. FYI, the UCSB AD leaving had nothing to do with Shayla leaving unless they were buddies and she knew the new AD might realize she's not that good of a coach. If you're good you shouldn't be worried about being fired.
