I am a coach and was in an interview for a new hire. Along with me were athletic administrator and an HR representative. After the interview and when the interviewee left the HR person stated that she was "different" than all of the others in the room. She was basically saying she is the only female. She went on to ask our plan to hire diverse coaches. We explained how we (me and two others on staff) networked and proactively reached out to try to identify diverse candidates. None with the qualifications of the person we were interviewing had applied.

So we tried for diversity but found a stronger candidate who like me and the other coaches are middle aged white men.

The irony in all of this is that we were essentially told to hire someone who looks "different than us". I was identified by three characteristics - white, male, middle aged. Hasn't it been established that in the past candidates for jobs were not pursued because of their race, gender, age. The irony is that we are now doing this. It is just we are doing it to a different group.

I believe in the value of diversity. I fully understand that I have lived advantages as a white male. However, now it seems I don't fit the part because of my race, gender, age. Wow. I thought we were trying to stop that kind of behavior.

The buzzword these days is "DEI" (diversity, equity, and inclusion ). Forget the Delta variant, this is the virus that will kill all progress. Death of merit = death of progress.

Lmao it’s not the death of merit! Merit of what? What you believe is worthy of merit? Administrators will decide what they believe to be be good or worthy at each of their own programs especially non revenue sports.

How about all you guys crying like a two year old wipe the 🐊 tears and get creative? Start volunteering at places to strengthening your resume to show a better understanding of “DEI”.

You will see behind most hires of a woman or POC, there will be an experience they have and understanding that they bring to a diverse team/program/campus. You all could gain this understanding also if you stop embracing this victimhood and stop relying on handouts in life!!
