Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

It was a very quick examination, about 5 minutes and I was done. The surgery is scheduled for Monday, and I can't wait to get back up and running

The thing is, he wasn't very clear on what exactly was torn; adductors, RA, etc. MRIs came back negative, as did ultrasounds. Anything else I should know or make sure to ask him before the surgery?

Oh, and should I opt for local anesthesia instead of general? It's only on my right side, and my doc-in-training sister said there are always inherent risks with general. Thanks!

Hey, just want to say that I was diagnosed with Sports Hernia. I totally understand your pain and frustration. After various cortisone shots to releive pain,an MRI, an X-Ray, pelvic rehab techniques, and doctor visits with negative results, I finally found an expert in the hernia field. He immediately dignosed me with Sports Hernia. He informed me that doctors never find this type of hernia. For the simple reason, NO BULGE. I had no bulge. He is starting to see this in athletes ranging from 25 - 37...so, there is light on the other side of the tunnel. Find specialist in hernia and that has done surgery for Sports Hernia. It is an "in and out" surgery. I had surgery on 10/15/09 and am recovering.

I will advise how long it will take and if pain persists after a 4 week period. I will see him again for a follow-up on 10/29/09...he then will advise whether I can begin rehab.

I would appreciate any opinions. I have had a lower st. muscle mild pain and inflammation for 18 mo. Have been doing therapy for 6 mo. Got CT scan, regular Ultrasound..nothing..I made appt. with UM in MUnich on Dec 1..funny thing is, now my muscle is feeling a lot better..walking 1 hr instead of 30 min..no pain..doing increased therapy that strains muscle more..little discomfort..used to try these and they hurt alot..now very little strain..now, I am wondering if I need to see UM or postpone? This injury I got may have occured years ago as I pulled a muscle moving and been feeling a little tender at that same spot after streneous tennis matches. It finally became extremely inflamed after a 3 hr singles match nearly 2 yrs ago..rested for about a year then started therapy..is it possible my muscle is on road to recovery, or just getting a little better with full recovery unlikely without surgery. Those of you who know DR. Mus., do you regard her as a person of great character to say that surgery is not necessary therefor passing up some cash? I believe she would give me an honest assessment but would like your feedback if you know her. I am sure most of you would tell me to go and see her and she will tell you what you have..It is not free to fly there and I am not wealthy..what do you think I should do? Thank you..

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting. I had the sports hernia surgery with Dr. Cattey about 4 weeks ago. I am still having pain in my perineum, same kind as before the surgery. Have any of you experienced this same type of pain this late after the surgery? Or is this normal, and will go away with time? Thank you

I did not have those symptoms, but I had a lot of inflammation in my pelvic/adductor region. Whether or not your symptoms are normal or not, remains to be seen. I think we are all different in responding to the surgery so I wouldn't get too nervous unless your doctor is concerned. I am about 5 months out of surgery with Dr. Hoadley, and I still have some weird sensations occasionally, but no pain whatsoever.

Early on in my recovery -- even as far as 3 months out -- I was really worried about the inflammation. It is gone now, but I still believe I have some irritation from the mesh or incision. It is not painful, but I will "feel something" in and around the incision area.

I am planning to play my second soccer game today. I sprinted all out for the first time in a couple years earlier this week. I had a lot of tightness afterward, but no problems. My game is back to 100% and I hope that my body is too.

Whats up everybody? I've posted on here before - I've had a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and then a Pelvic Floor Repair (sports hernia surgery) over the course of the last 17 months. Dr. Litwin of Umass, who worked with Dr. Meyers did my pelvic floor repair back in febuary.

I still am in just as much if not more pain now than I was before the surgeries so I made an appointment to see Dr. Meyers who based on my research is the best in the US. He was very cool & also very knowledgeable. I felt comfortable right off the bat.

What I liked about him is that he was able to find out what was wrong with me after all this time! Before we jumped into exploratory surgery, he thought I should get an MRI on my hip first. Thank God he did, because he found a large labral hip tear!

I'm not hyped about having to get that fixed, but my point is that Dr. Meyers found out what was wrong with me & was VERY thorough. If anyone has doubts about his interests, please do not because he is one of the few doctors who want to help you get better! I experienced this first-hand.

A lot of people including myself are very skeptical of the "sports hernia" surgery. I think there are some doctors cashing in on this, but Meyers is not quick to operate unless he knows he can help.

Like I said, I'm pissed I have to get hip surgery, but I do feel very relieved to finally get a proper diagnosis after all this time. If you are in the US, I would highly recommend going to see Dr. Meyers.

Hi - after dealing with 9 months of this, I saw Dr. Boyarsky in New Brunswick, NJ today. First guy who actually did an ultrasound of my abdomen/groin (Dr. Meyers in Philly did not) - he said that CT and MRI may not pick up things because they are static pictures and cannot see you contracting and relaxing your muscles (he learned this from Dr. UM in Germany).

The pictures showed the sports hernia in my right side muscles (you could see the difference between the "relax" and "contract" pictures) and he thought I would be a good candidate for the surgery. Even though I have discomfort on my left side (began a few months after this first started on my right), he thought it was compensatory and said he doesn't do bilaterial sides.

Anyone been seen/operated on by Boyarsky? If so, would appreciate your email address for me to ask some questions of- thanks!

I'm not sure I'm one of the lucky cases. I think I am a case of misdiagnosis of a sports hernia. And while Dr. UM did find bilateral inguinal hernia I'm not sure whether that was the cause of my pain or not. Possibly it was, or possibly it was simply a bad groin strain.

Dr. UM recommended me to have surgery to repair the hernia (I still had pain and couldn't play soccer at that time), but she recommended me to go to Shouldice and gave me their contact info even though she could've performed the surgery. She did recommended that to save me money.

Mike in ATL.... When I first saw Dr. UM in July she diagnosed me with bi-lateral sportsmans groin. She said she was VERY confident that she could operate on both sides and relieve my pain. She also told me that if I could find a surgeon in the US to perform a hernioplasty that would also fix it. And that option might be cheaper. So I most certainly don't think she would operate on someone who she didn't believe she was truly going to heal. I would guess Dr. UM is a little beyond doing this for the $$$$. I don't know anything about her lifestyle but I'm guessing she could retire at any point, but I bet she gets tremendous life satisfaction in her job. She seemed very genuine to me. I am almost 10 weeks post op and very close to being back to 100%

I had my surgery to correct the inguinal hernia found on the left side in July. I had some pain on the right side but the doctor did not find anything when he did the surgery. Over the labor day weekend I must have did something to aggravate the right side. Now since then(2 months) I have pain in my groin and hip. If I do not exercise it will start to feel a little better, but once I start the pain/discomfort starts.

The surgical side is great. Did you stop completely exercising? Your injury sounds a lot like mine. I believe the hernia found on the left was closer to the nerve as the right is not as painful.

Very frustrating!!!!!!!

You can go back to May or June to read my whole story, but I took 7 months off from soccer, periodically jogging just to test things out. After about 5 months I felt pretty good and ramped up my jogging, but avoided soccer until I knew what was really going on.

At 7 months I saw Dr. UM and she diagnosed me with the bilateral inguinal hernia. She said the pubalgia that showed on my MRI was not a sports hernia (as another doctor diagnosed), but a result of muscle tension in the pubic region due to the widening of the groin canal from the hernia. She also said that other pains I mentioned were probably the result of nerve contact and that if I had surgery it would fix my pains. She said I could start playing soccer, but just to know that I am more susceptible to groin strains due to the muscle tension in the pubic region.

I started playing soccer right away and haven't looked back. I don't have any pains, but occasionally feel a sensation in the inguinal area. Everything Dr. UM said sounded good and she seemed genuine, but as I've mentioned before I'm not sure I didn't just have a groin strain unlike any I've had before. I don't doubt that I have the hernia, but it doesn't seem to be the problem and since there's no bulge and no immediate concern I'm holding off on surgery.

4 weeks it way too soon to get to any conclusion. It's been repeated for many times on this thread that depends on the individual recovery power, injury complexity and its age, surgeon and many other variables the recovery can take from 4-6 weeks to 1 year. Hang on there couple of weeks more. Read the posts about the rehab and do it. Talk to your surgeon if this going to make you more confident. Report back with good news. Good luck.
