Dear Cross Country and Track and Field Alumni,
I write to share an update with you related to our coaching transition in the cross country program.
This past month we conducted a nationwide search to find the next leader for men’s Cross Country. We had a quality pool of candidates interested in the opportunity and narrowed it down to three coaches who traveled to campus for interviews. After meeting with the finalists, we felt one candidate rose to the top and he was offered the position. Unfortunately, due to many considerations that had nothing to do with UMass other than the timing of our opportunity, he did not accept our offer. At that point, we took a step back, re-evaluated the other candidates, and decided that with the beginning of the season upon us it would be smart to suspend the search.
We are very fortunate that our new Coach Emeritus, Ken O’Brien, is still wanting to serve this University and has agreed to coach the team through the fall season under the direction of our new Director David Jackson.
Given the timing of search and our desire to find the absolute best possible fit for UMass, we plan to go back out to a nationwide search in the winter/spring to find our next head coach. This is a positive position for the long-term.
We are looking forward to a great season and appreciate your continued support of our program.
Sincerely,
Ryan Bamford
