The reason "everybody" believes Smollett is guilty is because Chicago cops are leaking off the record that Smollett is guilty. The reason we have sixteen pages of posters stating that Smollett has changed his story is because cops have told reporters Smollett has changed his story. If Smollett is guilty of Making False Official Statements, either a misdemeanor or felony, up to prosecutors, why do not Chicago cops keep their mouths shut and just arrest Smollett?

In response to the question as to why the cops simply don’t arrest him now:
1) there is a grand jury convening to determine whether Smollett can be charged (and we know the outcome there since grand juries are not adversary proceedings), and
2) since Smollett has likely ignored legal advice to stay quiet, the police and prosecutors can hear him again degrade his credibility until indictments issue from the grand jury.
This isn’t about emotive feelings about the police. The kid is in trouble, and should have come clean long ago.
