Yes. Search Mimi anderson on Strava. She's close to Flagstaff now for Boots On The Ground action. Strava has cadence, not always heart rate though.

Sandra's Day 2 had a short stretch of ~1 mile where she shows a pace of 2-3 minutes per mile. You can see it around mile 47 on this page:

Not sure why she'd ride for a mile in the middle of a long run like that. It's only a mile out of hundreds that she's run, but it was clearly not a mile that she ran.

That run is from January. It's not part of the TransCon run.

Ah, thanks for the correction. That's what I get for posting at 1 in the morning. I had clicked on her 1 mile PR as it was such an outlier compared to her other PR's and didn't notice that it was from an earlier run. She does put in some miles!

In her latest run, Mimi averaged 15:41/mi. That's basically walking...if she wants a record she's going to need to pick up the pace. There is a sweet spot between taking it easy and getting your work done so you have time to recover (assuming a time limit). Going too fast or too slow will make failure a certainty.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I still think that both started a bit too aggressive. But we have to wait and see what happens.

Mimi Anderson had a strong first 8 days. An average of 60.0 miles/day is no joke.

Sandra had 220 after 4 days which makes it 55.1miles/day

It's a loooong way to go, so it does not make sense to predict anything right now.

When Pete ran his record run several months ago his pace was not adjusted for long breaks. If you followed along with him you could see the pace drop while he had breakfast and again lunch. To get a better idea of the pace subtract the break times.

On paper it always looks easy.

9 hours is not much. Pete had 11-12 hours of rest time every day. That is a huge difference in recovery time.

I agree with you. That's why I broke it down. That's also why I asked 'maybe'. I actually deleted a sentence asking how much rest Pete got last year. The thing to remember is that the women 'only' need to do 55M/day; Pete had to average over 70.

Do you think the women need to be moving a little faster to give themselves more rest time?

If memory serves, Pete also lost a full day early on in his run, but was able to recover.

The biggest problem I see with your 15/9 proposal besides the limited recovery time is that it doesn't leave a lot of room for error (illness/weather/injury etc). Falling behind at any point could be disastrous. But like Markus has said, it is early and both women might bank some extra miles while they're feeling fresh. We'll just have to wait and see.

It really is fascinating. There is so much that goes into a successful attempt. Pete's journey was incredible and inspiring for many reasons. I hope these ladies succeed as well.

You can't really bank miles.

You either can run x amount of miles in a day without a problem or you don't. It's that fine line every multiday ultrarunner run/walks along. Once you push too hard to get injured and than you have to deal with that.

15 hours effort per day seems a lot. This is not a closed course. This is an open road, way more dangerous than the 3100 mile race in New York for example.

Another issue are the crews. They get worn out quickly as well.

We are basically following the blueprint laid out by Pete on his record-breaking run last year (i.e., longest run in the morning (30-35 for her), 60 or so minutes off for lunch, and then a shorter run in the afternoon (20-25). The goal is 10+ hours a night off her feet and a full night's sleep every night.

Of the hundreds of runners I've coached over the past 3 years, Sandy is at the very top as far as mental toughness, proper attitude, and the ability to just run consistent miles without really slowing down. It will be very interesting to watch this all unfold over the next month+ . . .
