You're right about Timmons not doing his homework. I met Bill McChesney at the 76 Olympic Trials, he had just finished his junior year, run a smoking 10K and low 8:50's for two miles. Bill tells me he's looking at attending a school in the Midwest like Indiana. I asked him if he'd consider Kansas. He said yes. So I go to Timmie and tell him about McChesney and he just gives me this blank look. He obviously had absolutely no idea who the kid was and didn't seem to care about him in the least. I get the feeling that Pepin and the other assistants during that era did 90 percent of the recruiting.

I got a letter from KU stating that I needed to complete the enclosed track questionaire. Well, there was not one enclosed so I guess KU was jsut fooling with me. Even though Schmidt ran for Timmons.

KSU wanted me to walk on. Iowa State kind of recruited me due to Ryan Eichner being on their team. I even took a school visit, enrolled and got accepted at ISU during winter of 1971. However once outdoor track started and I was running better than I ever had, I did not receive one letter of encouragement from ISU, nothing after I won 5A state 2 mile. I got the feeling the ISU was not too interested in me. They would have had me with just a couple of letters during the season tellimg me they look forward to me showing up and walking on the upcoming fall XC season.

So I decided they didn't care if I came to ISU or not. So one Friday night in late June '72 after drinking a couple of 3.2% beers with Jim Dillon, I called Coach Pilkington up at CMSUfrom a pay phone at 95th and Nall parking lot and said I'd accept their $500/year partial offer.

And I guess the rest is history. As Jim said, I don't have any regrets at all. Met some great teammates/friends for life, got brought into the Bob Busby training philosophy and given the opportunity to improve. What more can you ask for?

Charlie: where did Dillon go to college? I noticed he placed 3rd in State X-C and 5th in State-track, 2-mile. He could have been a varsity guy at a CMS,PSU, etc. Was he one of those South guys that was 'fried and used up' after years with Schmidt? He at least started out running in college, didn't he?

And you are right about our 'scholarships'. Mine only covered tuition, which was 500 bucks and 25 bucks for book money. They weren't the 'real scholarships' that blue chippers got at D1 schools, that paid for everything; room and board being the biggest expense. I think it was more a matter of pride and feeling wanted. Nobody at PSU had a 'real scholarship'

Dillon was a year younger than me. He went to K State and ran one XC season, not sure if he ran after his frosh year.

I thought he ran 1:06 something, but when I went to the KC smoke website they have it listed as 1:07 and change - that must have been an old time.

I guess he and Nicolay went over to KSU. I remember seeing Nicolay when we (Club Midwest) won the Kansas State Invitational in the fall of '76, but not Dillon. I remember Dillon had a t shirt that said: "We love Pain"...no doubt one of coach Schmidt's psyche out tools from his bag of tricks..lol..I think he and Flea were wearing them at one of those post X-C season meets out at SMP that I came up and ran my frosh year in college. One of our guys had one that said: "I love beer"...lol....

Jennings went to Phillipsburg & graduated in 85. Interesting to note that's the same school as John Mason & makes it the only HS in Kansas to produce 2 sub 4min milers.

You are looking for road prs now, at traditional distances, not track, right?

here are my road prs. I have no illusion that these are 'top shelf' times. I'm sure there are many with faster times that you just don't have records on, yet. Guys like Stan Vernon, Fred Torneden among the old timers; let alone younger guys that I'm not aware of. btw, all of my road prs (and most of my road career, period), is thanks to Charlie Gray. When he moved to L.A. in '80-81, he got me out of a one year retirement, where I hardly ran. The whole year of '81 I trained with Charlie, losing weight, building back my endurance, before he moved back to KC in '82. He set me up for most of my road prs the next year; plus a 2nd place behind Mark Curp at the Hospital Hill, 7.7 miile in '82 on a trip home to visit family.

Wow...your PR's bring back some great memories...I was in CA until 82 myself...I didn't run in any of those races but raced in Griffith Park many times...I enjoyed running there...I wonder if we raced each other at times but didn't know it...I do remember racing Charlie in CA (I went to Azusa Pacific)...I knew Charlie because we ran together on a Club MidWest Team that went to Houston to run the US Cross Championships in 1977...the team consisted of Stan Vernon, Bob Busby, Charlie, Tom Logan, Ed Crum, Ron Tabb (I think, he either pulled out or DNF)...and myself...it was a fun trip

I remember you out here. (Terry Drake, right?). Long, red/blonde hair? I think I saw you at some meets. Didn't you run a track meet at Santa Barbara? That's where I reconnected with George Mason and Tom Koppes one time. I thought my brother said he ran against you at small college meets in Ks, too. Did you first go to Bethany? I do recall you ended up back in Manhattan, Ks. and set up a post collegiate group for steeplechasers and distance runners and ran really well there. (If my memory has totally butchered your history, I apologize-lol)

I'm sorry if this has been covered above... But, was anyone here on the KU team when Jim Euell was there? He was New England mile champ in 1970 and ran 4:10.1 at the Golden West, as I recall. I know he ran for KU, presumably beginning in the fall of 1970, but I don't think he improved at all over his HS times. Anyone know about him?

Very good...I ran for a few years with George out of UCI where we trained a lot under Vince O'Boyle...I did move back to Manhattan KS in 83 to run for Steve Miller and get my Masters...while there we had a great training group of both collegians and post collegians...Fred Torneden, Manny Bautista, Mike Vanatta, and myself were the post collegians there and then we had several very good college athletes as well...Mike Rogers, Bryan Carrol, Alfredo Rojas, Steve Smith to name a few...

Alfredo Rojas? He was a guy I battled in road races out here. An L.A. guy. How did he end up in Manhattan? lol
