We merged two Mary Cain threads into 1. The 2nd one was entitled, "Update: Mary Cain makes another sexual allegation - Alberto Salazar looked at her exposed breasts while she was sleeping"
Did Mary mention anyone in the book that she *did* like? Honest question.
Very few people come off well in the book. Even Jenny Simpson caught strays simply for not smiling wide enough at her one time.
treniere moser comes off decently as does ajee Wilson though ajee is not named. Kara comes off fine. But Mary DID include a lot of bad faith takes and unnecessary gossip if I’m being totally honest

Interesting. I always wondered if Moser was one of the "bullies" simply because she was so much older, and who knows how someone in that position would react to getting beaten by a girl half her age. But since Mary left no stone unturned in her scorched earth campaign, I guess we can feel confident that Moser remembered to smile at her.
Okay. So please inform me why someone with cancer travels all the way to Russia without enough medication, when they know when the world championships occur? And there solution isn't to talk to their own physician but to get a different physician who is a parent of one of their athletes to carry it out?
Is that something that a normal person does?
How about the fact that some of these medications cost upwards of 10K a month and insurance won't front multiple months worth? Who says Pete wasn't talking with his oncologist? Regardless, the point is that Mr. Cain's response was not one that would be expected from a physician and likewise for Mary's subsequent commentary.
So in your world, Pete goes to Russia without enough medication cancer medication knowingly and without any plan. He just thinks "I don't have enough medication but I'll just wing it. Someone will deliver my medication to Russia for me."
Some of us don't live in fantasy land. Dr. Cain's response is the exact response you'd expect from a physician: that's illegal, I could lose my license, go talk to your actual doctor.
Only in the NOP was smuggling drugs from country to country normal.
What specifically was said about jenny not smiling? Thats wild if so
She passed Jenny on a pre race run in Russia and Jenny’s smile felt unfriendly. The only mention of Jenny in the book. Mary was frustrated by lack of friendliness from everyone. Jenny was someone who was called names by Salazar so maybe that got back to her. Or maybe she was caught off guard. Or maybe Mary is remembering the interaction incorrectly. Just a wild decision to put that in a book.
If Salazar was such a great coach, why did he have to recruit the nation's most talented to demonstrate his skill? The same could be said for many high school and college coaches who are in fact recruiters of talent, not good coaches.
Recruiting at the club and high school levels has ruined youth sports.
I want to see her parents interviewed, this girl was apparently abused at every level of track and her parents didn’t pick up on any of it. Ok then.
A ton of posts on this thread, and FINALLY someone gets it. I've said it over and over, "Where the F**K are her parents"? According to Mary, she was suffering pretty bad. Was she not telling her parents what was going on? Self esteem issues, weight issues, suicidal tendencies, not being accepted by the group, etc... Holy Cow!!! All of this could've been avoided had mom and dad intervened. If I'm sending my 17 year old running prodigy daughter across the country to train with a group of professional adult runners, I'm either taking a leave of absence from work, or will be earning some serious frequent flyer mileage by flying back and forth, at least bi-monthly to be there for her. The only possible defense her parents have is that Mary didn't let them know she was struggling, and if that was the case, Mary had some SERIOUS issues, and probably still does. I'd love to see her parents interviewed about all of this, it's a huge piece of this sh^t puzzle that needs to be looked at. Maybe she's protecting them, thus throwing everyone under the bus.
Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Cain...is anyone home? You have some explaining to do.

No one was asking Dr. Cain to prescribe anything specific. They simply wanted to ship Cain medicine and have him transport it because he was traveling to the race. There was no proof it was even Pete’s actual medication they would’ve shipped to New York for Dr. Cain to transport.
you all have so much to say about something you clearly didn’t read.

There are so many plausible reasons why one may not smile at a teammate. Weird that Cain carries it in her heart still and cringe that she decides to write about it in a book that will have her name on it forever.
Can someone explain to me why she had to live with him? I understand that this happens or at least isn’t rare. But surely Nike had the money to provide housing for their athletes. Or did her parents genuinely think that she would be safer and her life easier if she stayed with him, presumably because she was still a high schooler and wouldn’t have to worry about cooking for herself and all the household stuff?
Pretty sure Caitlin Chock lived with him for a little bit when she was working with him about 20 years ago. If I recall correctly, it was partially to make sure she was getting healthy, home-cooked meals. I don't think it's anything too troubling in and of itself assuming Mrs. Salazar and maybe his kids were around. Invading a young girl's bedroom at night is much weirder*.
*I'm giving Mary the benefit of the doubt that Salazar didn't tell her in advance that he'd be coming into her room to mess with the altitude tent, hence why she had an expectation of privacy and wasn't fully clothed.
Yeah I don't really understand this at all. Whatever else he's done, it's not his fault if he looks in a room and someone is for some reason topless? How would he know they were going to be in a state of undress? I don't understand why someone wouldn't be wearing a T shirt at all times at a coach's house either. Don't get it.
Did her guest room door not have a lock? The universal protocol is to lock the door when you want privacy. If there is no lock, you at least close the door shut to indicate need for privacy. The other side of that protocol is to knock and wait for a response, not just barge in.
It’s unclear who violated what etiquette in this alleged mysterious misdemeanor of exposed breast witnessing.
If one does not want anyone to see any part of their body, they should keep that part covered up with clothing at all times unless they sure they are in a private area behind a locked door.
I would not expect 100% total privacy staying overnight in anyone else's house (or anywhere) unless I was behind a locked door.
If she was in an altitude tent in Al Sal's house, it might be possible that as a coach he was checking on that training equipment in the night to ensure it was functioning properly. Just as a coach might check on an athlete using another training device like a treadmill or sauna
I doubt he was entering that room hoping or expecting to see some exposed part of her body through the plastic window of an altitude tent.
Some of these coaches are creeps. Even if they are innocent, they are putting themselves into situations they shouldn’t. If you are a man coaching girls / women, they should never stay at your house. If you have to do room checks, there should be another adult of the opposite sex to do them with you. These common sense lines exist for a reason. I see some coaches cross these lines and it just baffles me the level of stupidity and ego these guys have. It is not worth the lawsuits and accusations.
I agree. I don’t believe the Kara Goucher “digital insertion” story, but Salazar was a fool for getting as close to these women as he did. Basically asking for an eventual lawsuit. Even if it was before MeToo, he should have still known better.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition? My biggest supporter, advocate, and person who has always believed in me is my former Nike coach, Alberto Salazar, as well his wife, Molly. After the accident that took my leg, I was severely depressed and would not be alive today if it weren’t for them. Any success I ever achieve in this life, including the hardest battle of just being ‘happy’, is thanks to them.
