5:06.3 for the last 1.107 = 4:36.7 pace, but still, extremely impressive and he put 19 seconds on Washburn in that final split. When they ran conservatively for the first 2 miles I thought the first sub-15 at the state meet might be off the table, but Heidesch is just so good.
Something disastrous happened to Thompson from City High, maybe he was sick or took a hard fall, I have no idea. But even if he’d run well, Dowling was way out there, and it still wouldn’t have been Dowling vs. City like some had thought throughout the season, but rather Dowling and then everyone else.
51 points for Dowling, going 1-5-9-14-25 with non-scoring individual qualifiers included. I’m not an expert on the other teams in the Heartland region, but my gut tells me they can qualify for NXN if they run like they did today.
In 2012, Dowling Catholic scored 60 points at state. That was when they made NXN. This year they scored in the 50s. If the 4-5 gap shrinks a little, they have an even better shot at NXN

They could also win the region, something they didn’t do ever including 2012. Bismarck won it that year
Anyone know how the state course is measured/ mapped out year to year?. Consistently saw GPS measurements ranging from 3.15-3.20. Even measuring the tangents, and on the apex of every corner seems like the course is still running long.
Seems to me that many of the courses throughout the season were short. There were just way too many people running under 16, many considerably under, compared to most years.

Iowa city ran on so many short courses. Their state result clearly proved this
5- Wide open. Norwalk, Waukee NW seem most likely. SCN always seems to find 5 guys.
1- Washburn, 2- Heidesch 3- Nash 4- Plumb 5- Merrick. There are a few other under the radar guys capable of cracking this list.
I sure hope City can win. Dowling has been the bane of our existence in every sport...forever.
If there is any team that could take Dowling down next year, it would be Ankeny. They surprised everyone with their 3rd place finish and are only losing 1 person.
Dowling loses Heidesch/Flynn/Klocke but Ankeny only loses 1 guy

3.15-3.20 on a GPS watch seems within the margin of error to me. The reality is that on an accurately measured XC course, virtually nobody is going to be able to run only 3.107 miles, considering the tangents/turns but also navigating through the field of 120 runners. Plus, GPS watches are not 100% accurate anyway.
I would hope the course is measured with a wheel and is practically identical from year to year. I wasn’t there yesterday, but the course map and photos from the finish look the same as they did from 2006-2009.

absolutely right, I know two runners that never had a race of 3.10 all season and then had 3.16 yesterday. Really wish the weekly courses where more accurate.
Yeah, the course was short the two years that the previous course record of 15:02 was run. It was short in 1997 when Chris Francois ran 15:05, too, because the person driving the lead cart cut off part of the course. Before today, the legit course record was Shadden's and Dak's 15:05's, with Dak's being the most impressive, given he won by 59 seconds. In 2011 and 2012, I remember there were timing issues, too, saying the winning time was 14:50ish initially and then being updated later on. This happened both years. I don't know exactly what took place to cause the timing error and how they actually corrected it.
