One of my favorite books about Middle East situation - From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas Friedman. He is a lib but wrote a fantastic book - read it.
If you think a guy who supported Killary Clinton for President and who supported the Iraq War is a genius then yeah sure read it.
Friedman is famous for being a moron.
There is a whole cottage industry where people come up with inane columns and the game is to supply the contestant with several of these and several Friedman columns (all unidentified as to who the author is) and have the contestant guess which are the actual Friedman columns.

Hamas gave no warming and targeted civilians directly and you defend them every day.
I don’t defend Hamas at all. I hate Hamas. They are scum.
New material needed.
I think it's a brain issue.. if you tell them you think Israel's reaction is wrong and ineffective, to them that means you love Hamas. How do people like this function?
The footage is barbaric. Telling people to go south for their personal safety and murdering them anyway is barbaric.
No THIS is barbaric. Directives for the Hamas fighters.
The Israeli air force published a chilling, handwritten note Wednesday that it alleged was found on a Hamas fighter who invaded the country on Oct. 7. "The words from Hamas commanders," according to the Israeli air force, "consist of an order to kill Jews and encouragement to decapitate their victims and tear out their hearts and livers. "Know that this enemy of yours is a disease that has no cure, other than beheading and extracting the hearts and livers!" the Israeli military agency quoted the note as saying in a post on X.
The emergence of the purported note comes days after Israel released what it described as "gruesome" and "unseen" bodycam footage of Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attack in order to counter a "Holocaust denial-like phenomenon evolving in real time."

What should Israel's reaction be genius?
Tell us with your infinite 10th grader wisdom what the answer is.
This is the woman ITV invited on to talk about ‘Islamophobia’ this week, and how tough it is to live in Britain. Here she is on the day of the Hamas massacres: pic.twitter.com/c1vzs1uYHm
If you want to help the Palestinians start a petition to have 100% of Palestinian children separated from their parents so they don't grow up to be anti-semitic morons like this idiot.

He's not very liberal to be fair. Much more centrist, very pro-free trade and a big fan of big tech. I read all his books (another one you might like is "The Lexus and the Olive tree"). I personally don't agree with all his views, but here are two ope-eds he wrote in the last couple of weeks in the NYT. They're behind a paywall, so I'll post the excerpts separately... he basically is making the same case I made earlier. (He's a better writer than I am obviously.)
“There will be no one to extract Israel and no one to help Israel pay the cost of caring for more than two million Gazans — not if Israel is run by a government that thinks, and acts, as if it can justifiably exact its revenge on Hamas while unjustifiably building an apartheidlike society run by Jewish supremacists in the West Bank. That is a completely incoherent policy. Alas, though, a senior U.S. official told me that the Biden team left Jerusalem feeling that while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel understands that overreach in Gaza could set the whole neighborhood ablaze, his right-wing coalition partners are eager to fan the flames in the West Bank. Settlers there have killed at least seven Palestinian civilians in acts of revenge in just the past week. Meanwhile, U.S. officials told me, the representatives of those settlers in the cabinet are withholding tax money owed the Palestinian Authority, making it harder for it to keep the West Bank as under control as it has been since the start of the Hamas war.”
And “That is why I believe that Israel would be much better off framing any Gaza operation as “Operation Save Our Hostages” — rather than “Operation End Hamas Once and for All” — and carrying it out, if possible, with repeated surgical strikes and special forces that can still get the Hamas leadership but also draw the brightest possible line between Gazan civilians and the Hamas dictatorship.”

All these Islamist/jihadist movements — the Taliban, Hamas, ISIS, Al Qaeda, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, the Houthis — have deep cultural, social, religious and political roots in their societies. And they have access to endless supplies of humiliated young men, many of whom have never been in a job, power or a romantic relationship: a lethal combination that makes them easy to mobilize for mayhem. “If Israel overreacts in Gaza, it will drain out whatever residual good feelings toward Israel exist, and that is Hamas’s big bet. Israel has built so much, enjoys so much and contributes so much to the world and has so much more to contribute. To risk all that in an act of revenge or rage that will not fundamentally alter its strategic dilemmas is exceptionally unwise.”
And
"My bottom line? Just ask this question: If Israel announced today that it was forgoing, for now, a full-blown invasion of Gaza, who would be happy, and who would be relieved, and who would be upset? Iran would be totally frustrated, Hezbollah would be disappointed, Hamas would feel devastated — its whole war plan came to naught — and Vladimir Putin would be crushed, because Israel would not be burning up ammunition and weapons the U.S. needs to be sending to Ukraine. The settlers in the West Bank would be enraged. Meanwhile, the parents of every Israeli soldier and every Israeli held hostage would be relieved, every Palestinian in Gaza caught in the crossfire would be relieved, and every friend and ally Israel has in the world — starting with one Joseph R. Biden — would be relieved. I rest my case."

There are no "residual good feelings" toward Israel in Palestine. The children are raised from the cradle to hate the Jews. They blame the Jews for EVERYTHING despite 99.99999% of their problems being the fault of their parents and their parents parents' own stupidity and weakness.

We get it, if it's up to you all Palestinians would just be annihilated.. no need to keep justifying. Wipe them all out before Hamas kills another 1,000 right?
